Albert Marth is apparently the first to see any part of the nebulosity (NGC 2238, which see), though Lewis Swift was the first to call attention to its great size.
It was found by Marth in 1864 with Lasalle's 48-inch reflector, which probably accounts for Marth's ability to see the faint star embedded in the knot.
NGC 2637 (which see), found by Marth the same night, also suffers from a declination error of 8 arcmin of the same sign, though the RA is only off by 6 seconds.

 Obit: Marth, Albertina (1847 - 1924)
Albert Marth, one of the old residents of Pine Valley, Clark County, Wis., died suddenly at her home Tuesday evening, July 29, 1924.
Marth, whose maiden name was Albertina Beyer, was born in Germany Dec. 10, 1847, making her 76 years, 7 months and 18 days old at the time of her death.
She came to America Oct. 24, 1872 and was married to Albert Marth in Neillsville July 1877.

Albert Marth found these two objects in the area of the N4065 group during his Malta observations of March 1865 with William Lassell's 48-inch reflector (these are m229 = N4056 and m230 = N4060; their data are transcribed correctly into NGC).
Marth's position is near a very faint galaxy that I doubt could be dug out visually even with the 48-inch -- is N4056 perhaps the star preceding Marth's position by about two arcmin?
There is no doubt about the identification (Marth places it close following NGC 4795), and though the object looks pretty stellar on the blue POSS1, it is clearly elongated on the red plate (hence on the DSS).

The NGC identifies this large, diffuse nebula as NGC 6820.
However, Albert Marth's description, "F,S,R,bM" does not match the large nebulosity associated with the galactic cluster, NGC 6823.
Astronomer Brian Skiff has noted that Marth's position and description do match the small reflection nebula, IRAS 19403 +2258, located nearby at 19h 42m 27.9s +23d 05m 15s.

Quarter Million Year Canon of Solar System Transits
Marth makes no explicit predictions, since the orbit of Neptune was not sufficiently well known and even given better tables would require "stricter computations than I have made".
Marth calculates, based on the tables of Le Verrier, that no transit of Jupiter from Saturn occurs in in the last or next 2000 years from the 1886 date of his paper.
Marth missed the following 1869 transit, probably because it was so close to a graze.

Why William Lassell did not discover Neptune
However with the discovery of an overlooked statement by Albert Marth, one time assistant to Lassell, it is possible even they can now be finally laid to rest.
Although the truth may never be known, by his intimations of Adams and Dawes, Marth does at least edge the story away from family oral tradition, coincidentally to invest it with a little more credibility.
Importantly, according to Marth Dawes informed Adams sometime around 1852 when the incident was still comparatively fresh in mind.
