The French historian Albert Mathiez (1874-1932) was one of the major 20th-century historians of the French Revolution.
Albert Mathiez was born to an innkeeper's family at La Bruyère in eastern France on Jan. 10, 1874.
Danton, whom Aulard admired as a patriot, was to Mathiez a corrupt demagogue; Robespierre, a tyrant to Aulard, became for Mathiez the champion of social democracy.

MATHIEZ, ALBERT [Mathiez, Albert], 1874-1932, French historian, an authority on the French Revolution.
Although not a member of the Socialist party, Mathiez was a follower of Jean Jaurès.
For Mathiez, the French Revolution began as a struggle between the bourgeoisie and the aristocracy, but evolved into a conflict that pitted the middle class against the working class.

The Historians' French Revolution - The World and I Magazine
Although the first quarter of this century witnessed various approaches, including that of the rather conservative Augustin Cochin (1876-1916) as well as that of the socialist leader Jean Jaures (1859-1914), the most visible battle in this period was the struggle between Alphonse Aulard (1849-1928) and Albert Mathiez (1874-1932).
Mathiez's politics--sometimes socialist, occasionally communist--doubtless reinforced his historical perspective.
Although Aulard and Mathiez both demonstrated extraordinary mastery of the historical sources, the tendency of each to lionize his personal hero made their work often unconvincing.

Marx had taken the dialectical-historical structure of his teacher Hegel and replaced ideas as a causal force in history by the means of production (or in other words, economics).
While the dialectical-materialist school produced a lot of nonsense, from its ranks there also came a number of very great historians such as R. Tawney, the authority on sixteenth- and seventeenth-century, England, and Albert Mathiez, one of the most brilliant of all historians of the French Revolution.
The dialectical-materialist, or Marxist, school was the first group of historians to examine systematically the development of the peasant and proletarian classes, and it therefore provided new insights into the course of economic and social change.

The process of building a bourgeois (capitalist) society in France has been documented by the influential French academic historians Albert Mathiez (1874-1932), George Lefebvre (1874-1959) and Albert Soboul (1914-1982).
They were also very public members of the French Communist Party, and in due course this provoked a "revisionist" challenge from liberal and conservative ideologists.
