Albert C. Outler: United Methodist Ecumenist
Outler makes no pretense that life is all one “have a good day” smile, and his pleasant expression bears the marks of being worn by someone who cares and has cares.
Outler is reluctant to cite examples, since exposure often makes the networks vulnerable to public-relations hype and consequent disappointment or decline.
Outler’s second case against the mainline is that it has not, in code language, recognized the expiration of the Enlightenment and Enlightenment rationalism.

KEEPING UP WITH JONES ON JOHN WESLEY'S
On the one side, there is still a huge debt to be paid to Outler for his labors, his ingenious suggestions, and his extraordinary rhetorical skill.
On the other side, the real issue in the end is not the theology of Albert Outler, but the theology of John Wesley.
They have been convinced by Outler and others that Wesley is a truly great theologian, so to find this kind of incompetence will be a shock to the system.

ALBERT C. Had Bishop Mathews been interested in pointing to one theologian as an example of how Methodism can take a person and shape that person into a great theologian, he would have had to consider Dr. Albert C. Outler as a top candidate.
Albert was a “surprise,” and a good one at that, to his parents.
The roles of a bridge builder and a prophet were compatible in his being…” (409) According to Outler, witnessing in the Church and to the world aims at bridge building, not at accommodating and not at destroying, for the sake of the Gospel.

President Williams Origins - A Series of Essays
In his history of Methodism and John and Charles Wesley, Albert Outler has stated that the ongoing tension within Methodism over separation from the Church of England led Charles Wesley to become weary of the struggle.
Even though Charles was successful in 1756, as in previous years, in getting the preachers who attended Conference to sign a covenant not to separate from the established church, the pressures did not relax; finally, Charles began to tire of the struggle and to fear its outcome.
Outler writes, “It was his aversion to schism, more than any other factor, which influenced his gradual and quiet withdrawal from the Methodist movement.” Charles’ last extended preaching tour was in 1756.

 John Wesley's Sermons: An Anthology
I found the book to be very rewarding, allowing me to experience and have a deeper appreciation for John Wesley's theology, which to a large degree has been debated because of Wesley's different stands on certain issue's through out his life.
The sermons that Outler & Heitzenrater have selected for this book, allow the reader to know the heart of John Wesley, which Wesley expressed through out his life, and it allows the reader to have a grasp on John Wesley's theology as it grew through out his life time.
Most of these 50 sermons were included in his Works (an official collection of his writings put together by Wesley himself), and they were intended to help guide those in his movement in understanding the basic theological ideas that he considered important.

 Theology Today - Vol 21, No. 4 - January 1965 - BOOK REVIEW - John Wesley Beings
The joint appearance of Professor Outler's John Wesley and Professor Fairweather's The Oxford Movement as the first volumes of "The Library of Protestant Thought" to be issued is a significant milestone in the history of American theological publishing.
Important as this experience was as marking a change from faith in faith to faith itself, yet it drops out of sight most abruptly, and was followed by a series of upheavals and spiritual frustrations.
Some interpreters will feel that Dr. Outler has not done justice to the influence of the Continental Reformers on Wesley, and yet others that he has minimized the Puritan influence on Wesley.
