11/10/01: Bad director of the week: Albert Pyun...
Albert Pyun is a director who started with a perhaps promising start with "The Sword and the Sorcerer", a movie pretty much forgotten by cinema fans, except that the title was used to lable a genre of fantasy movies in the early 80s.
Pyun followed it with many forgotten flicks (including one of Courtney Cox's first flicks), until making one of the movies for which he would be best remembered: "Alien from LA".
Pyun at last made in 1996 a movie that got theatrical release - that is, it was released in only a couple of theatres nationwide, with no advertising, and in 1997: "Adrenalin: Fear the Rush".

What?...Oh, I can hear some of you out there saying, "Who is Albert Pyun?" *Sigh* It looks like I'll have to write an explanation of who he is, and review this movie to give those not in the know an idea of the man.
Albert Pyun is an Hawaiian born director who has made a career and an infamous reputation of incompetent B-movie filmmaking.
Pyun does come up with a somewhat different ending to this story, which has been ripped off other times before.

Adrenalin: Fear the Rush (Albert Pyun, 1996)
Albert Pyun is an extremely prolific director of low-budget direct-to-video sf/action hybrids.
Pyun premiered with The Sword and the Sorcerer (1982) and went onto make the likes of Cyborg (1989), Captain America (1990), Dollman (1990), Knights (1993), Nemesis (1993) and its three sequels, Arcade (1994), Heatseeker (1994), Omega Doom (1995) and Postmortem (1997), among others.
Pyun shot on location in Slovakia in what looks like a city sewer system — all the film really consists of is a series of chase scenes through the tunnels.

 dOc DVD Review: Ticker (2001)
Prolific low budget director Albert Pyun (Cyborg, Kickboxer 2, Heatseeker) has cobbled together a better-than-average mad bomber flick with the 2001 release of Ticker, which is loaded with a decent cast and plenty of B-grade action.
Even though much of the film is pieced together with stock footage from other projects, Pyun manages to string along a steady stream of guns and explosions, and never bothers to mire the viewer down with too much lengthy exposition.
Director Albert Pyun and producer Paul Rosenblum leave an endless series of extended silent gaps during their track.

This is yet another of Albert Pyun’s cyborg films - see also Cyborg (1989), Nemesis (1993) and its three sequels, Knights (1993) and Omega Doom (1995).
Pyun also makes the mistake of allowing this action to take up nearly half the film and the results are tedium inducing - the equivalent of watching televised sport where one has no interest in the game.
Pyun and co-writer Borkagen seem unclear as to whether her actions in being directed to leave her husband behind and become the trainer/lover of his cyborg rival are being conducted by mind-control implant or by coerced choice.

 AboutFilm.Com - Adrenalin: Fear the Rush (1996)
Writer/director Albert Pyun must have been touring a group of abandoned buildings and an old jail in Bratislava one day when his Muse suddenly spoke to him.
Second, because Pyun knows that he can't just have his stars stumbling around in the dark chasing a deformed bad guy for an hour and a half (sample dialogue: "Over here!" "What?" "Arrrg!"), he devotes several minutes to setting up a premise.
Finally, realizing that appealing to an American audience is essential to cinematic success, Pyun shrewdly informs us that his story is set in Boston, even though most of the characters have foreign accents, and the police cars bear the distinctly un-American word Policia.

Pyun, if you are not familiar with his oeuvre, constructed his B movie credentials by releasing such classics as "The Sword and The Sorcerer," "Nemesis," "Mean Guns," and "Postmortem." He's a hack's hack in the hack world of zero budget schlock.
Not to pound you over the head with it, but watching a Pyun film often resembles in no little way craning your head out the window to see that car accident on the freeway.
And for the most part Pyun carries off the action well, much better than he has in many of his other movies.

Well for starters, the movie was obviously written for Sasha Mitchell in the lead role, but unfortunately for Albert Pyun (but fortunately for Mitchell), Sasha Mitchell became a regular on a TV show called "Step By Step", so Pyun was forced to recast a new martial artist.
And while Mathews was one of the few actors from that series to actually have more than two movies on his resume, he only has a career because of Albert Pyun.
Pyun, like he did in Kickboxer 2 (and like he would also do in Heatseeker and many other of his movies) has put in so many bad camera angles and chopped the fights up so bad that these scenes are botched beyond belief.

An Albert Pyun production can threaten the mental stability of even the most diehard B movie fan.
As far as I know, there are only two Pyun films really worth watching: the early 1980s sword and sandal picture "The Sword and The Sorcerer" and this movie, the 1993 science fiction thriller "Nemesis." Two good movies out of a slew of stinkers doesn't mean I wouldn't watch any of his clunkers, though.
Anyway, Pyun's name is synonymous with junk in B movie circles.

Alas in Pyun’s handling the character of Captain America fails by quite hilarious lengths to overcome its own anachronism.
