Albert Sydney Willis was Minister to Hawai‘i in the administration of President of the United States Grover Cleveland.
Originally a politician from Kentucky, Willis was sent to Hawai‘i on a secret mission to meet with Queen Lili‘uokalani and obtain a promise of amnesty for those involved in the overthrow of the monarchy if Cleveland restored her to the throne.
Willis' mission was deemed a failure when Sanford B. Dole sent a written reply declining the surrender of his authority to the deposed queen.

By the advice of her ministers, and to avoid bloodshed, the queen surrendered under protest, in view of the landing of United States troops, appealing to the government of the United States to reinstate her in authority.
Willis with much difficulty and delay obtained the queen's promise to grant an amnesty, and made a formal demand on the provisional government for her reinstatement on the 19th of December 1893.
On the 23rd President Sanford B. Dole sent a reply to Willis, declining to surrender the authority of the provisional government to the deposed queen.

She was the widow of Samuel Gilson; her maiden name was Elizabeth Harmon, and she was born in Rupert, Vt., 12 Nov. 1788,-a direct descendant in the fifth generation from John Harman, who appears in Springfield, Mass., as early as 1644, and who died in that place in 1661.
At about the age of seventy, Albert, who had been a life-long user of tobacco, was moved, probably by some religious revivalist, to abandon the weed.

Dr Albert Lloyd George (Lloyd) Rees died at his home in North Balwyn, Victoria, on 14 August 1989 at the age of 73.
