Early on he decided to change his name from Anastasio to Anastasia to avoid bringing shame upon his family and being identified with them when he was mentioned in newspapers as a gangster, or so the story goes.
Albert Tannenbaum stated to Turkus that Anastasia ran afoul of a crusading longshoreman named Peter Panto, who had begun a campaign to clean up the Brooklyn waterfront in 1939, and an enraged Anastasia personally garroted and buried the labor leader in quicklime.
There was no typical mobster funeral for Albert Anastasia, with massive floral wreaths and a long motorcade of limousines packed with fl-suited gangsters.

Also in the 1930s, and working out of a candy store in the shadow of the New Lots elevated line's Saratoga Street platform, these sons of Brownsville built a coast-to-coast enterprise that handled mob hits wholesale, and which, in a coldly brilliant stroke, they named Murder Incorporated.
They themselves became known by such names as Louis (Lepke) Buchalter, Abraham (Kid Twist) Reles, Albert (Allie Tic Toc) Tannenbaum, Martin (Bugsy) Goldstein, Arthur (Dutch Schultz) Flegenheimer, Charlie (The Bug) Workman, Mendy Weiss, Harry (Pittsburgh Phil) Strauss, and Abraham (Pretty) Levine.
But Tannenbaum was also a famously muscled heavy and murderer, and Kleid ends up trying to humanize him by inventing a starchy moralist father who slips in and out of the story on winds of estrangement and reconciliation—a soppy theme of Jewish-American fictions old enough to have moved Mrs.

This latest controversy about the issue of diet and cancer is the most recent in a series of similar squabbles going back decades, pitting Establishment science and medicine against mavericks -- and in some cases, even mainstream professionals like Arnot -- who discover the promise of diet and cancer and try to advance the field.
In the 1920s and '30s, diet and cancer was a vigorous area of conventional scientific inquiry, and scientists like the late Albert Tannenbaum, MD of the Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago and Kanematsu Sugiura, DSc of Sloan-Kettering discovered -- in effect -- the existence of an anti-cancer diet.
The promising work in this area went into decline shortly after World War Two when the then-new chemotherapy drugs for cancer shifted orthodoxy's emphasis to expensive pharmaceutically based treatments as opposed to food-based prevention.
