Albert Zafy, born in 1931, president of Madagascar (1993-1996), who restored the country to civilian rule.
In 1991 Zafy’s UNDD joined 15 other opposition parties to form a coalition named Vital Forces, whose aim was the institution of multiparty democracy and the removal of Ratsiraka; Zafy became the head of the coalition.
Zafy, suspicious of both the IMF and Ravony, spearheaded a referendum to amend the constitution to allow the president instead of the parliament to appoint and dismiss the prime minister.

Zafy, in opposition to Ratsiraka, set up an alternative government in 1991 and was successful in forcing Ratsiraka to agree to the Panorama Convention on October 31 of that year, which established a transitional government and stripped Ratsiraka of most of his powers.
Zafy's time in office saw economic decline, which negatively impacted his popularity, and amid accusations of corruption and abuse of power, he was impeached in July 1996.
In December 2006, Zafy's property was raided by police as part of the government's investigation regarding General Fidy, who allegedly attempted a coup in November, and presidential candidate Pety Rakotoniaina; both of them are wanted by the police, who have been unable to locate and arrest them.
