Albert of Aix - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Albert of Aix-la-Chapelle or Albert of Aachen (floruit circa AD 1100), historian of the First Crusade, was born during the later part of the 11th century, and afterwards became canon and custos of the church of Aachen.
Albert never visited the Holy Land, but he appears to have had a considerable amount of intercourse with returned crusaders, and to have had access to valuable correspondence.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Peter the Hermit
While the contemporary historians mentioned him only as one of the numerous preachers of the crusade, the later chroniclers, Albert of Aix-la-Chapelle, and above all William of Tyre, gave him an all-important role.
One day when he was asleep in the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre, Our Lord appeared to him and ordered him to ask for credentials from the Patriarch of Jerusalem and to go to Europe proclaiming the miseries which had befallen the Christian of the Orient.
It is absolutely certain that it was only after the Council of Clermont that Peter commenced to preach the crusade.

Sybel in his Geschichte des ersten Kreuzzuges proved, that Albert of Aix was not a good authority, and that consequently William of Tyre must be set aside for the history of the First Crusade, and other and more contemporary authorities used.

The journeys to Jerusalem are principally based upon an ancient account of the first crusade by Albert of Aix, written two-and-a-half centuries before Mandeville, and the recent passages from a number of pilgrimage books of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.
Mandeville uses impartially the sober Historia Mongolorum of Plano Carpini 10 or the medieval forgeries called The Letter of Alexander to Aristotle and The Letter of Prester John: no compilation of fiction or erudition comes amiss to him.

From this time he disappears; but Albert of Aix records that he died in 1115, as prior of a church of the Holy Sepulchre which he had founded in France.
It also appears in the pages of Albert of Aix, who wrote somewhere about 1130; and from Albert it was borrowed by William of Tyre.
The whole legend of Peter is an excellent instance of the legendary amplification of the first crusade -- an amplification which, beginning during the crusade itself, in the "idolizations" of the different camps (idola castrorum, if one may pervert Bacon), soon developed into a regular saga.

 Godfrey of Bouillon Summary
Christian chronicles make no mention of this; instead, Albert of Aix and Ekkehard of Aura report that Godfrey contracted an illness in Caesarea in June, 1100.
It was later believed that the emir of Caesarea had poisoned him, but there seems to be no basis for this rumour; William of Tyre does not mention it.
Godfrey's role in the crusade was described by Albert of Aix, the anonymous author of the Gesta Francorum, and Raymond of Aguilers amongst others.

One anecdote of Godfrey of Bouillon, related by Albert of Aix, is worth recording, not only as showing the high opinion entertained of his valour, but as showing the contagious credulity of the armies -- a credulity which as often led them to the very verge of defeat, as it incited them to victory.
Albert of Aix informs us that their hearts were so touched that sleep was banished from the camp, and that, instead of waiting till the morning's dawn to recommence their march, they set out shortly after midnight, full of hope and enthusiasm.

 CRUSADING: 1099-1999
No wonder that the chronicler, Albert of Aix, saw Peter the Hermit as a leader of the crusade.
The account of Peter the Hermit in the Chronicle of Albert of Aix, on the other hand, places Peter at the center of the crusade, but it has generally been rejected.
Though it fed on dissatisfactions in Jewish-Christian relations, its real basis was not in religion but in what Albert of Aix referred to as an "error of the mind," a deviation from the norms of society.

According to Albert of Aix, Godfrey, learning that the emperor held in captivity Hugues, a prince of France, demanded the latter's freedom, and on the emperor's refusal pillaged the neighborhood of Salabria (Selymbria).
At last, 2 April, 1097 (the date given by Anna Comnena is preferable to 13 January given by Albert of Aix; see Chalandon, "Alexis Comnène", 179), on the approach of Bohemond, the emperor decided to act, and cut off the supplies of the crusaders.
Several combats ensued, and, despite the contrary assertion of Albert of Aix, Godfrey must have been defeated.

But the work is to be looked on as the outpouring of a deeply religious and poetic heart, which saw in the contemporary Christian knighthood the salvation of the civilization of Christendom.
