She teaches medical studies in all three of Social Medicine’s core courses, and is an editor of The Social Medicine Reader (Duke University Press, 1997).
Her Ph.D. in Near Eastern Studies at the University of California, Berkeley was awarded in 1981.

He received his Ph.D. in linguistics at the University of Michigan in 1942 under Charles Fries (Leonard Bloomfield was also on his dissertation committee) and later served for 30 years on the faculty at the University of Michigan.
Pike's major theoretical contribution in linguistics was his development of tagmemics, an important theory in American linguistics until the paradigm shift toward Noam Chomsky's transformational grammar theory in the 1960s.
