Alberta won the award for the fifth consecutive season and for the ninth time since the trophy was awarded in 1978-79, finishing the 2005-06 season with 205 penalties for 418 penalty minutes.
Golden Bears freshman hockey netminder Aaron Sorochan is U of A male Athlete of the Week and Canada West hockey Player of the Week for the weekend of Jan. 27-29.
Alberta is one point in front of the Huskies in the standings and has two games in hand with three weeks remaining in the conference schedule.

GOLDEN BEARS TOURNAMENT RECORD: This weekend's appearance at the Golden Bears Invitational marks the second and final tournament of the season for Alberta and it is the 83rd tournament that the Golden Bears have participated in since their first tournament appearance in 1966-67.
Alberta is 19-0-1 at Clare Drake Arena during the current streak, 6-0-3 on the road and 1-0-0 on neutral ice.
The Golden Bears won their fourth consecutive season opener and improved their all-time record in season openers to 53-30-8 (.626) with a 5-2 win in the season opener on September 19th and then completed the sweep with a 3-1 victory on September 20th.

OTTAWA (CIS) — The reigning national champion University of Alberta Golden Bears, host of the event for the second consecutive year, have been established tournament favourites for the 2006 Canadian Interuniversity Sport men’s hockey championship, the Telus University Cup, to be held in Edmonton, March 23-26.
The Golden Bears finished first in the Canada West combined standings for the sixth consecutive campaign with a 21-5-2 record, before claiming their sixth straight conference banner with a two-game sweep of Saskatchewan in the championship series.
Alberta was defeating Saskatchewan for the fifth year in a row in the conference final.

This past weekend, the Alberta Golden Bears men’s hockey team showed why they are the second ranked team in the country and why they have not lost a single game at home this year, sweeping the Bisons in a best-of-three Canada West semi-final series in Edmonton.
The result qualifies Alberta for the CIS championship, held March 21 to 23 in Kitchener-Waterloo, and eliminates the Herd from the playoff picture.
Alberta then evened the match seven minutes later, and took the lead early in the second period with a goal at the 2:04 mark.

The docile Bears awoke and roared to life in the 23rd minute on a goal by fifth-year veteran Mike Radmanovich, a midfielder from Edmonton.
Only eight minutes later, however, Alberta midfielder Damir Jesic, a native of Sarjevo, Bosnia, was red carded for illegal contact and the Bears were forced to play one man short for the remainder of the game.
Alberta actually outshot the Mustangs 6-5 and had six corner kicks to Western's three but they couldn't muster any sustained offence being short a man.

Golden Bear's goalie Schwartz stood on his head in the third period, making some terrific saves inclduing a miracle stop on a breakaway by Grandmaitre.
The Golden Bears would reward their golden goalie seconds later when, on the ensuing rush, right winger Ryan Wade (Victoria, BC) wired a shot just under the crossbar to tie the game at 2-2 and send the game into overtime.

The Bears kept applying the pressure and before the period was complete Ben Thomson scored his first of two to give the Bears the lead.
Although the Bears were out shot in both the first and second periods they would be the ones to capitalize on their opportunities.
Alberta's defensive play was steller however, and the Bisons were unable to penetrate deep in the Bear zone.

The transition to the Bears was not a hard one for Pool: he played on teams with several current Bears during his WHL years, including Konrad Brand, Wade Burt and Steve Shrum in Kamloops, and Kris Knoblauch when he was on the Edmonton Ice roster.
Pool helped the Bears to last year’s national championship, and has turned a lot of heads with his near-perfect performance so far in the post-season: in four games, he has allowed only four goals and has posted two shutouts.
Pool is also a member of the Alberta chapter of Athletes in Action, a program that promotes faith in God and one that sent him to Russia last Christmas on a dual mission: to play hockey and to promote faith.

The Golden Bears claimed their sixth consecutive and 45th conference championship with a two-games to none victory over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in the Canada West Hockey Final on March 10th-11th at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton.
ALBERTA AT THE UNIVERSITY CUP: The Golden Bears are making their CIS record 31st appearance in the 44-year history of the University Cup tournament since the CIS inaugurated the national championship in 1962-63.
This is Alberta’s 10th consecutive trip to the University Cup since 1996-97 and it is the Golden Bears 13th trip to the national championships since 1990 as they also made appearances in 1990-91, 1991-92, 1992-93, 1996-97, 1997-98, 1998-99, 1999-00, 2000-01, 2001-02, 2002-03, 2003-04 and 2004-05.

 Thunderwolves Hockey - News - Telus University Cup Pool A Preview: Alberta Golden Bears
Alberta faced the Saskatchewan Huskies six times this year and went 4-1-1 including their two-game Canada West title playoff sweep.  The Bears also played Acadia twice in non-conference action in Edmonton.  The teams split the series with Alberta winning 3-2 on Dec. 29th and Acadia winning 5-4 on Dec. 30th. 
The Golden Bears have strength throughout their roster and are led by players like Canada West First Team All-Star, All Rookie Team Selection, and Rookie of the Year; goaltender Aaron Sorochan, who had phenomenal stats between the pipes (15-4-1, 2.29 GAA,.908 SVP).
Offensively, Alberta is led by dangerous forward Ben Thomson (17 goals, 16 assists; 16th CIS), MVP of the 2005 TELUS University Cup, was  also a First Team All-Star.   Brad Tutschek (11-22-33; 19th CIS) and All-Rookie freshman Dylan Stanley (14-19-33; 20th CIS) can also deliver on the offensive end.

 Alberta, ranked fifth in the country, will meet the second-seeded Winnipeg Wesmen, who bounced the Bears from the Canada West conference playoffs, in today's gold-medal match (2:30 p.m., TSN).
But the emotionally charged Bears turned things around as All-Canadian Sandy Henderson found his range for a kill and a service ace, Mike McPherson put down a winning stop at the net and Brad Bell finished it off with rocket off a two-man Bison block.
