Alberto Santos-Dumont — seriously ill, and said to be depressed over his multiple sclerosis and the use of aircraft in warfare — is believed to have committed suicide by hanging himself in the city of Guarujá in São Paulo, on July 23, 1932.
Santos Dumont serves as the inspiration and namesake for a small Coffee and Ice Cream Shop in Milford, New Hampshire which doubles as a small museum with a collection of photographs and biographical information about him and related turn of the century aviators.
The Rodovia Santos Dumont is a highway in the state of São Paulo.

I find it odd that there is no mention in the article or subsequent discussion about the excellent book on Santos-Dumont written a few years ago by Paul Hoffman: "Wings of Madness : Alberto Santos-Dumont and the Invention of Flight" Not only is it an exhaustive biography, it is a well-written and fascinating read.
Lets face it guys, Santos Dumont was the father of aviation, but of course, nations like the United States like to claim what ever they can for themselves.
When Alberto died, thousands of pilots in the air all over the world dipped the wings of their planes in his honor at the precise moment his coffin was lowered into the ground.
