Alberts Kviesis (December 22, 1881 - August 9, 1944) was a Latvian politician and the third president of Latvia.
Kviesis was a member of Latvian People's Council (Tautas Padome) which declared Latvia's independence in 1918.
In 1930, Kviesis was elected the president of Latvia and, in 1933 he was reelected for the second term.

 Kārlis Ulmanis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On May 15, 1934, due to the economic repercussions of the Great Depression and the political and military dangers faced by Latvia from the rise to power of aggressive governments in Germany and Russia, Ulmanis as Prime Minister dissolved the Latvian Parliament Saeima and established executive non-parliamentary authoritarian rule.
The incumbent President Alberts Kviesis was allowed to serve the rest of his term until 1936, after which Ulmanis merged the office of President and Prime Minister in his own person.
In spite of this bloodless political coup, Ulmanis was a popular leader during whose leadership Latvia recorded major achievements.

 Soviet Russia's Persecution of Latvia, 1918 to the Present
The third president of Latvia, Alberts Kviesis, who also belonged to the Farmers' Union, invited Ulmanis and the ministers of the eighth and last of his governments to the presidential castle.
President Kviesis announced that because the overwhelming majority of Latvians was behind the Ulmanis government, he considered Ulmanis' coup to have the force of a plebiscite.
Kviesis thus gave his approval and blessing to the new government of national unity.

The third bishop, Albert of Buxhoevden, with Pope Innocent III's permission, founded the Order of the Brothers of the Sword in 1202.
On April 11, 1936, on the expiration of the second term of office of President Alberts Kviesis, Ulmanis succeeded him.

The Wiesenthal Center called for his extradition to Latvia, but Latvian Senior Prosecutor Uldis Strelis claimed that there was no evidence that Kalejs had been involved in Nazi war crimes and that those who had submitted testimony against him had been unduly pressured by the Communist authorities.
The issue of Latvian collaboration with the Nazis was also mentioned in connection with the appearance of the name of former Latvian president Alberts Kviesis on the list of dormant Swiss bank accounts.
During World War II, Kviesis served as one of the General Directors who collaborated with the Nazis and was therefore at least in theory, in a position to benefit from the persecution and murder of Latvian Jewry and the confiscation of their property.
