Harry Elmer Barnes: The Place of Albion Woodbury Small in Modern Sociology   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Small soared magisterially at times with the systematizers, at other times made extremely profound and cogent contributions to social economics, and always believed himself to be notably furthering the cause of sociological methodology.
Small was interested in it both as a forerunner of the synthetic social science for which he was laboring, and also as an example of the exploitation of social science as the guiding and controlling factor in public policy and social betterment.
Small was a man of real tolerance of viewpoint and true catholicity of interests, and this led him to build up a sociology department that represented a great diversity of points of view and specialized interests.

Ninth Street Center Journal 7: Dean Hannotte
Albion Woodbury Small (1854-1926) is Becker's paradigm of an early pioneer who finally gave way to despair, though never to cynicism.
Small insisted that the perverse bifurcation between fact and value, by which narrow scholars eluded moral responsibility for their work, be abolished, defining sociology as none other than a new name for moral philosophy.
Small had created a Frankenstein's monster, a 'neutral social science,' and his own pleadings were now beside the point; the discipline was in new and younger hands.

In the next place, Small's founding of The American journal of Sociology was epochal and this, together with his editorship and contributions for over thirty years, undoubtedly constituted his greatest contribution to American sociology.
In Chapter 3 we have quoted Small at length on the origins of sociology and in Chapter 15 on his methodology.
Although more lengthy references to Small than to Giddings, Ward, and Sumner have been made in previous chapters, two special aspects of Small's work need to be emphasized here as indicative of the timeliness of some of his work as appropriate to certain contemporary situations.

For example, Moses Stuart, a student of Timothy Dwight's who taught at Andover, interpreted Scripture from the standpoint that the doctrinal and ethical teachings of the Bible constituted the infallible revelation from God, not the person of Jesus.
Similarly Andrews Norton, Dexter Lecturer in Biblical Criticism at Harvard, argued that the Bible rested on a small number of "great truths" upon which all of Christianity was built.

Correspondence of key faculty members and administrators is distributed across the Presidents' Papers, 1889-1925, some of it located under the name of the individual and some under the name of a department, school, or other institutional unit.
To search for the correspondence of University administrators such as Albion Small, George Vincent, Charles Henderson, and Marion Talbot, the researcher will need to be aware of which administrative responsibilities each held and to locate headings in the inventory related to those responsibilities.
Files on individual academic units -- schools, departments, and offices -- can be found under the sequence of headings beginning with the phrase "Chicago, University of" in the alphabetical listing.
