In 1794 the Albion was consigned to the role of a 60-gun floating battery moored on the Thames Estuary, but in April 1797 while heading to a new position in the Swin Channel, ran aground and two days later, during salvage efforts, broke her back and was completely wrecked.
The second Albion was a ship-rigged sloop of just 336 tons, and was an ex-merchant vessel bought by the Royal Navy, though she was privately owned in her previous role as a hired armed ship, she was manned by a Royal Navy crew.
The seventh Albion was a Canopus-class pre-dreadnought of approximately 14,000 tonnes, with a main armament of 4 x 12 inch guns and was built by Thames Iron Works, launched in 1898 and commissioned in 1901, serving on the China Station until 1905.

The two Fearless class ships, HMS Fearless and HMS Intrepid, were the first purpose built amphibious warfare vessels in the Royal Navy.
Designed as Landing Platform Docks, they were designed to transport and land troops by sea either using LCUs or helicopters.
Fearless was kept in service, and continued to be deployed in concert with HMS Ocean until the end of 2002, when she too was withdrawn from service, ready for the Albion class to enter the fleet.

The slipway was assembled, triggers were positioned, poppets were constructed forward and aft and 1150 tons of carefully laid chain was attached to Albion to arrest her once she entered Walney Channel after the 15mph journey down the slipway.
Albion took to the water at 10.20 am on March 9th 2001, the largest ship launched at Barrow since HMS Invincible in 1978, cheered on by more than 1,500 shipyard workers, their families and local school children.
With this in mind Albion's entry into service was revised so that she would be handed over on August 9th 2002, enabling her to enter operational service in January 2003 - some seven weeks earlier than originally planned.

The entire class of thirty ships was contracted with a single shipyard to facilitate mass construction on 23 June 1970 although labor and technical problems delayed construction.

HMS Albion finally put to sea to begin her Phase 1 of Contractors Sea Trials on 16 December 2002, and was handed over to the Royal Navy at Devonport on 4 April 2003 and formally commissioned by the Princess Royal on 19 June 2003.

The Royal Navy's Astute class submarine is a nuclear powered attack submarine which is to replace the five Swiftsure class submarines launched between 1973 and 1977 and are approaching the end of their operational life.

A contract for two Landing Platform Dock ships was placed with VSEL (now BAE SYSTEMS Submarines) on 18 July 1996 to replace two existing amphibious ships, HM Ships FEARLESS and INTREPID, which have been in service since 1965 and 1967 respectively.
