Trikitixa - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The trikitixa is known since the early 19th century, when it was imported to Basque Country through Italy and the port Bilbao.
The onomatopoeia trikitixa originally referred to a traditional Basque ensemble, made up of the instrument which now bears the name as well as alboka, txistus and other instruments.
It became a welcome instrument in Basque festivals, however the Catholic church resisted it, calling it "hell's bellows" since its dance-inciting music would lead Basque youths into temptation.

The Basque version consists of two horns (they appear from pictures to be made from actual animal horn) that face opposite directions and are joined in the middle by a handle or bridge with two rows of fingerholes.
Alan Griffin, by the way, jokingly claims to be the world's greatest Irish alboka player, “because there is no other”; the facility with which he plays this unusual and no doubt difficult instrument is impressive nonetheless.
According to the Oxford Companion to Musical Instruments, the word alboka is not of Basque origin but derives from the Arabic al-buq, meaning horn (there is also a Spanish variant, albogue); any similarity to Spanish boca (mouth) is apparently coincidental.

The Alboka's tubes are joined along their length and each tube has a reed on one end.
Alboka players use circular breathing to produce a continuous sound somewhat like that of the bagpipe.
While the Txistu, Alboka and Dultzaina are among the oldest Basque musical instruments, the instruments most associated with traditional Basque music and dance today--both in the Basque homeland and in emigrant communities--are the diatonic button accordion and the more recently developed piano accordion.

The first is the Txistu, a three holed end-blown pipe which is held and fingered by the left hand while the right hand keeps time on a small drum that is suspended from the bent elbow of the left arm.
The second instrument is the Alboka, a double-tubed cane pipe.
The reeds are enclosed in a cow horn, which serves as the mouthpiece of the instrument.

The combination of guitars, mandolins, bouzoukis, ttunttun, accordion, alboka, bagpipes, flutes and crumhorns, and a carefully chosen selection of dances and airs taken from the living tradition and from the great Basque music collectors gave rise to a first disc which was something new in a Basque folk music scene more accustomed to vocal recordings.

The alboka is a double clarinet unique to the Basque country.
Junkera may be the bright star of Basque music, but he takes the time to nurture other artists performing on traditional Basque instruments in new and often innovative ways (such as the txalaparta duo Oreka Tx).
The focus throughout this ambitious and enjoyable work is a meditation on the past, present and future of the alboka, in which Koteron and friends produce moments of pure joy.

Oskorri is a big group, seven people plus guests, and they feature full-bodied instruments like bagpipes, alboka (a kind of sharp-toned clarinet), accordion, saxophones and electric guitars and basses, together with the more delicate sounds of ocarinas, flutes, and mandolins.
The alboka, played by Koteron, is joined on most tracks by diatonic accordion, tambourine, and txalaparta (a big Basque percussion instrument made of boards and stones that sounds like one of the larger African xylophones) played by Junkera.
Most of the melodic lines are carried by the strong, wailing voices and the accordion, but guests do add electric guitar, Spanish guitar, alboka, keyboards, and other instruments as well to keep things lively and interesting.

The screeching duo of Caroline Phillips' zanfona, or hurdy-gurdy, and Mixel Ducau's alboka, a traditional Basque double-reed instrument featuring dual fingering tubes, adds a tonal edge similar to that of the bombarde and biniou found up the coast in Brittany.
A slow zanfona outro fades directly into "Nun Zira," swinging guitar strum, strong darbuka and cajón percussion, and saxophone wail supporting Phillips' and Ducau's harmony vocals seemingly where they left off on "Oihan," but with enhanced drive.

Ornette's influence also appears on the joyous but too-short romp “Bill Sketch #2.” There is a powerful piano solo by Waltzer on ”Alboka Sketch Band,” and most of the remaining improvising is contrapuntal.
McHenry and Benitez are heard improvising together on several pieces, and Perez adds his spiky guitar as yet another voice, most notably on “GDK.” As for the alboka, it's a Basque instrument, a double-reed clarinet that sounds something like bagpipes.
Thus, despite some excellent music, the album is too diffuse to have much impact.

The duo Alboka is accordionist Joxan Goikoetxea with wind multi-instrumentalist Alan Griffin, both highly regarded in Euskal Herria and elsewhere as interpreters of the Basque tradition.
A highlight is the gravely voice of Benito Lertxundi teamed with Griffin's flute on "Hariztarren balada," the tale of the Oaks who would not obey the king and so had to be destroyed (a parable for the Basque situation since the oak of Gernika is a national symbol).
In "Sakabiren biribilketa" Griffin picks up the clarinet to create a BasqueKlezmer fusion sound, while the title track, among others, shows his skill on the alboka.
