Albrecht Dürer (May 21, 1471 - April 6, 1528) was a German painter, wood carver, engraver, and mathematician.
He is best known for his woodcuts in series, including the Apocalypse (1498), two series on the crucifixion of Christ, the Great Passion (1498-1510) and the Little Passion (1510-11) as well as many of his individual prints, such as Knight, Death, and the Devil (1513) and Melancholia I (1514).
His father, also called Albrecht, was a goldsmith and served as assistant to Hieronymus Helfer, and in 1468 married his daughter Barbara.

The son of a goldsmith, Albrecht Dürer became known as the “prince of German artists.” He was the first to fuse the richness of the Italian Renaissance to the harsher northern European arts of painting, drawing, and engraving.
Albrecht Dürer was born in Nuremberg, Germany, on May 21, 1471.
In the north, in Germany, the painter and printmaker Albrecht Dürer was influenced by the oil painting technique developed by the medieval Flemish school and by the ideas of the Italian Renaissance, which he studied on a visit to Italy.

 THE EPICYCLOID
This idea was not superceded until Copernicus (1514) theorized that the sun, rather than the earth, was the center of the universe.
The construction of the epicycloid was first described in 1525 by Albrecht D¸rer, a German artist.
However, it is worth noting that French mathematician Philippe de La Hire, whose father was a student of Desargues, is credited with inventing the epicycloidal profile for gear teeth in 1694, twenty years later.

The decision of Albrecht D¸rer, thought of as the greatest artistic genius of the northern Renaissance, to direct his talent towards printmaking instead of painting, was pivotal to this transition.
Among the 33 artists represented, the 10 prints by D¸rer are striking examples of the medium at its height in terms of technical mastery and the depiction of allegorical subject matter, prior to the subtleties that would soon follow.

Albrecht D?rer's famous woodcut of the four horsemen as described in the Book of Revelation has been studied at great length and from many angles.
However, the authors of this new study make a significant contribution to the discussion by demonstrating that contemporary folk consciously used this particular image to better understand the troubles that beset them and to frame these crises in an intelligible and meaningful context.
In this new interpretation of European history, Cunningham and Grell (coeditors, Health Care and Poor Relief in Counter-Reformation Europe) contend that the four horsemen of Albrecht D rer's famous 1498 woodcut prefigure the religious conflict, war, famine, and pestilence that characterized the 16th and 17th centuries.

Cunningham and Grell argue that sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Europeans used the imagery of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse to help them understand, decode, and give meaning to the disasters they endured in a world they experienced as unstable.
The imagery of the horsemen was broadly familiar to sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Europeans, regardless of literacy, because of growing familiarity with John's Apocalypse, thanks to the period's many vernacular translations of the Bible and to Albrecht Durer's famous and oft-copied 1498 depiction of the horsemen.
The horsemen also serve as the book's organizing principle as Cunningham and Grell argue that the prevalence of disasters during the period was due to the pressures of a population boom and the climatic changes that fueled it.
