Human Handling of Polar Bear Stirs Flap - Science - RedOrbit
Albrecht told The Associated Press his beliefs were more nuanced than reported by Bild, though he applauded the debate the article had started.
He explained that though he thought it was wrong of the zoo to have saved the cub's life, now that the bear can live on his own, it would be equally wrong to kill him.
Albrecht cited a similar case of a baby sloth bear that was abandoned by its mother last December in the Leipzig city zoo and killed by lethal injection, rather than being kept alive by humans.

 Berlin and Its Culture
Albrecht von Ballenstedt, a count of the Ascanian dynasty nicknamed the Bear, was personally enfeoffed with the territory by the Holy Roman Emperor Lothar III, and the whole area, roughly corresponding to the later province of Brandenburg, core of the state of Prussia, became German territory once and for all (Ill. 1).
The terrain is generally low-lying and marshy but north and south of the Spree two elevated areas rise which the successors of Albrecht the Bear, foraging from their principal base in the town of Brandenburg, occupied around 1230.
It would be nice to believe that the bear on the city's coat of arms gave his name to the place but that is unfortunately only a whimsical piece of folk etymology.

Nation & World | Fans agree Germany's polar-bear cub too cute to kill | Seattle Times Newspaper
Fascination with the nearly 19-pound bear surged in recent days after headlines generated by an animal activist who insisted the cub should have been killed after Knut's mother, Tosca — formerly a performing animal in an East German zoo — ignored him, and his twin brother died in December.
Knut is bottle-fed, washed and cuddled by his adoptive father, who moved in to the zoo to sleep in a bed by the bear's crate.
The story earlier this week prompted quick condemnations from the zoo, politicians and other animal-rights groups who argued that although the bear would be more used to humans than his counterparts in the wild, there was no reason not to have kept the cub alive.

Hannah Arendt [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
Her goal was to propose a phenomenological reconstruction of different aspects of human activity, so as to better discern the type of action and engagement that corresponded to present political existence.
While attending a conference in 1972, she was put under question by the Frankfurt School Critical Theorist Albrecht Wellmer, regarding her distinction of the 'political' and the 'social', and its consequences.
It may be said that Arendt's attachment to a fundamental and originary understanding of political life precisely misses the fact that politics is intrinsically concerned with the contestation of what counts as a legitimate public concern, with the practice of politics attempting to introduce new, heretofore 'non-political' issues, into realm of legitimate political concern.

Historical data: After several futile attempts to incorporate this land, which had been settled by heathen Slavs since the 7th century, into the Christian Franconian realm, it was the achievement of the Ascanian Albrecht the Bear to make these regions accessible for East German settlement in the 12th century.
After the decline of the Ascanians in 1320, Brandenburg was administered by the Wittelsbachs, later by the house of Luxembourg, who tended to neglect the region as such.
