Albrecht von Haller - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Albrecht von Haller (October 16, 1708–December 12, 1777) was a Swiss anatomist and physiologist.
Haller's attention had been directed to the profession of medicine while he was residing in the house of a physician at Biel after his father's death in 1721.
Haller, who had been three times married, left eight children, the eldest of whom, Gottlieb Emanuel, attained to some distinction as a botanist and as a writer on Swiss historical bibliography (1785-1788, 7 vols).

ALBRECHT VON HALLER (1708-1777), Swiss anatomist and physiologist, was born of an old Swiss family at Bern, on the 16th of October 1708.
The quantity of work achieved by Haller in the seventeen years during which he occupied his Gottingen professorship was immense.
Notwithstanding all this variety of absorbing interests he never felt at home in Gottingen; his untravelled heart kept ever turning towards his native Bern (where he had been elected a member of the great council in 1745), and in 1753 he resolved to resign his chair and return to Switzerland.

 BookRags: Albrecht Von Haller Biography
The Swiss physician Albrecht von Haller (1708-1777) conducted experiments in organic sensibility and irritability that are landmarks in the development of physiology.
Albrecht von Haller was born in Bern on Oct. 16, 1708.
Although both concepts predated Haller, he was the first to demonstrate experimentally that sensibility (the ability to produce sensation) existed only in organs supplied with nerves, while irritability (a reaction to stimuli) was a property of the organ or tissue.

Haller was born in Berne and studied at Leiden, the Netherlands.
Tracing the pathways of nerves, he was able to demonstrate that they always lead to the spinal cord or the brain, suggesting that these regions might be where awareness of sensation and the initiation of answering responses are located.
Haller published De respiratione experimenta anatomica/Experiments in the Anatomy of Respiration 1747 and Elementa physiologiae corporis humani/The Physiological Elements of the Human Body 1757-66.

As a child Haller was so sickly that he was unable to amuse himself with the sports and games common to boys of his age, and so passed most of his time poring over books.
The principle of general irritability had been laid down by Francis Glisson (1597-1677) from deductive studies, but Haller proved by experiments along the line of inductive methods that this irritability was not common to all "fibre as well as to the fluids of the body," but something entirely special, and peculiar only to muscular substance.
Haller, however, in common with his contemporaries, failed utterly to understand the true function of the lungs.

The aim is to interweave the reasons for the stratification of the text, his choices in scientific writing and in the communication of his results, with the torment of an intellectual torn between extreme experimental honesty, deeply-felt religious beliefs, the coherence of the system and the inflexible impositions of scientific methodology.

A main topic is the earthquake of Lisbon 1755, with the important role of Voltaire, who embodied the Enlightenment like no other and who was the greatest ideological antipode of Haller.
Although earthquakes are the main focus of attention, some comparison is made with letters discussing cattle diseases, plagues, famines and floods.

The definition of Lutembacher syndrome has undergone many changes.
The earliest description in medical literature is found in a letter written by anatomist Johann Friedrich Meckel to Albrecht von Haller in 1750.
