Herr von Thadden started religious exercises in his own house, which were attended not only by the peasants from the village but by many of the country gentry; they desired the strictest enforcement of Lutheran doctrine, and wished the State directly to support the Church.
This tendency of thought acquired greater importance when, in 1840, Frederick William IV succeeded to the throne; he was also a man of deep religious feeling, and under his reign the extreme Lutheran party became influential at Court.
He was present occasionally at the religious meetings at Triglaff, and though he never quite adopted all the customs of the set the influence on him of these older men was for the next ten years to govern all his political action.

Prussian field marshal and chief of staff Helmuth von Moltke was known among his colleagues as “the Golden Man,” and so he seemed to be with his brilliant military leadership, his skill as a writer, and his reputation for honesty and decency.
His changes in the original plan of attack in the West—the Schlieffen Plan—contributed significantly to stalling the German offensive and bogging the war in a four-year stalemate of trench warfare.

World War I was the delirious climax of the struggle for the mastery of Europe between the upstart German Empire and the declining Entente Powers--the Russian, French and British Empires.
The reckless ministers and generals of the German Empire, having abandoned the cautious policies of Chancellor Otto von Bismarck and the defensive military plan of Helmuth von Moltke (the Elder), wanted to break the perceived "encirclement" of the Entente Powers and speed up the inevitable German economic and political hegemony in Europe.
In the midst of this disarray, the Vienna Settlement was demolished by the convergence of Bismarck, Moltke and Albrecht von Roon, the Prussian minister of war.
