The explosive album opener, "Collision," and "Naked in Front of the Computer" show that the band can still compose prime heavy rockers, while other musical forms were included as well (the romantic ballad "She Loves Me Not," the evil boogie of "Home Sick Home," and the Middle Eastern sounds of "Mouth to Mouth").
For the gripping album closer, "Pristina," the '90s turmoil in Yugoslavia is used as a backdrop for a tale of lovers being separated due to war.
Album of the Year was a fitting way for one of alt-rock's most influential and important bands to end its career.

The album features a new guitarist in the lineup, but that is not really important as it doesn't add or take away from the industrial prog rock project that this thing seems to take on.
This album has a collection of songs that vary greatly in theme and sound, and that is what makes it all the more enjoyable as a truly complete album.

Year in Review 2001 | Music
The band toured all year and provided hope and inspiration to hundreds of thousands while successfully meeting its stated goal: to reclaim its mantle as the best rock 'n' roll band in the world.
New York and the nation could both use a boost and we got it thanks to the rush that came with listening to the punk-edged fury of the Big Apple's new saviors The Strokes, and their scorching debut disc Is This It.
The fact that this album was released on Sept. 11, just adds a strange and weird footnote to its timeless wonder.

Album of the Year's premise is somewhat ungainly: to document the passage of a year in 12 songs, one for each month.
Augmented by Mike Mogis' best production of the year (and manning the boards for a label like Saddle Creek, it's been a busy one), each song seems to hover in fathomless space, but interacts with an effortless synthesis that belies such separation.
The complaints with the album are worn-in with old caveats, namely the "emo" tag.

The Music Box: The Good Life - Album of the Year (Album Review)
His latest effort Album of the Year is a conceptual piece with each of its dozen tracks signifying a calendar month that features Kasher’s romantic reflections on the season.
Inmates, in particular, shines brightly as Kasher yields the lead vocal duties to female band-mate Jiha Lee, and as a result, the song flourishes with its nearly 10 minutes of emotional exploration and heartbreak that invokes the spirit of Rilo Kiley.
While Album of the Year isn’t a hook-heavy pop outing, it also isn’t mere background music because Kasher’s super-smart and insightful lyrics serve as the anchor that holds this truly remarkable effort together.

On any given song, there's usually enough power chord crunching to keep metal enthusiasts hooked, but also enough restraint and tonal complexity to attract listeners who may not otherwise be tempted to put a track on their stereo which requires a nodding head and the de rigueur 0zzy hand salute immortalized by Beavis and Butthead.
For the most part, this holds true on the band's new disc, "Album of the Year".

The albums of the aforementioned artists are all fabulous but only one merits a special recognition as the "1997 album of the year." It belongs to an artist whose voice, music, lyrics and quality of recording is superb and outperforms those of her fellow musicians by a wide margin.
She is based in Toronto and her distinct voice can be easily noticed in Hussein Said's "Cab Canada" album, more specifically in "Teabide Bealey" in which she performs the back-up singing.
She composed the music for five of the songs and wrote the lyrics of two, but her greatest strength is the powerful combination of her stupendous vocal talent and her incredibly sensual voice.

Album Of The Year: Nine Inch Nails' The Fragile
After five years of writer's block and solitary confinement, Trent Reznor returned with a beautifully brutal examination of a depression, disillusionment, and grudging self-acceptance.
And Reznor, for his part, must follow one of the most publicized cases of writer's block of the decade (more than five years sine his provocative last album, The Downward Spiral) with a quick-change from studio shut-in to dramatic focal point.
Though the album has gone platinum, the first single, "We're in This Together" never quite ruled radio or MTV, which used to rotate the leather-clad provocateur quite heavily.
