The Big Album, the album that is the realization of an artist's or band's vision, is not so much suffering for lack of a musical trend as it is suffering under the weight of larger trends in the music industry.

 Album-Oriented Rock History Summary
Radio stations that specialized in rock music recorded during the later 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s were generally labeled Album-Oriented Rock (AOR) stations.
In the 1970s, rock album sales accounted for an increasing proportion of record company profits, but the AOR format remained somewhat experimental until technological improvements brought stereophonic capabilities to FM radio.
As FM rock radio matured, its audience widened and it became apparent to record labels that AOR stations, especially those in large market cities, were effective if not critical marketing media for their products.

Although a relatively short-lived phenomenon, pub rock was notable both for returning rock to the small clubs of its early years and as a breeding ground for many of the punk and new-wave artists of the late 1970s.
Rock festivals had their origin in the jazz festivals held in Newport, Rhode Island, and in Monterey, California, in the 1950s.

When “rock ’n' roll” gained popularity in the 1950s, Chicago had long been a center for both blues and rhythm and blues.
While mainstream rock and roll temporarily stagnated at the end of the 1950s and into the early 1960s, some important local and regional scenes still flourished.

Albums by artists such as Russell Allen's Atomic Soul, the Ben Jackson Group, Seventh Key, just about anything on Italy's Frontiers record label, even long players such as Tesla and mainstream darlings Velvet Revolver are all helping to bring a heavier rock sound to the forefront.
Besides using a mass amount of analog synths, the album was recorded using analog tape, no Pro-tools or any digital medium used, making the album a true-to-life rock record.

By 1977, WPLJ tended to emphasize hard rock artists such as Led Zeppelin (there was a nightly "Get the Led Out" segment), Black Sabbath, Rush, Kansas, Boston, and Queen, who happened to get less less airplay then on competing station WNEW-FM.
Beginning in 1969 it gained attention for its "progressive" freeform rock music format.
The station was different from Top 40 stations (such as co-owned WABC) in that they played more album tracks.

Released on March 24, 1973, it ushered in an era of album-oriented rock and transformed Pink Floyd from ranking English acid-rock conceptualists to a goliath of the international super-league.
Large chunks of the album still feature prominently in the live shows of both Pink Floyd and Roger Waters and it is clearly a body of work that has become part of the collective rock consciousness.
With it striking sound effects of chiming clocks and ringing cash tills, it is the sort of album that has traditionally appealed to the audiophile section of the rock market and has doubtless been a priority purchase for many proud investors in the new CD technology.

 ALBUM ORIENTED ROCK
Taking the Top 40 format dominating AM radio, AOR consisted of tight, scaled-down song rotations, usually one or two selections preferred by the artists themselves (or the listening audience, if the street-level verdict was unanimous in nature) from the bestselling rock albums of the day.
AOR's appeal was also diminished by the decline of mainstream rock acts such as Bad Company and the Doobie Brothers.
It was geared to album, rather than 45 r.p.m.

The mood of the album has an even more contemporary model—the sensitive guy style that began in the late sixties and reached its peak in 1975 with Morris Albert's legendary "Feelings." Sensitive guy songs made extensive use of the absent—and if possible, dead—wife as a dramatic theme.

As with their debut album, the album is good and very consistent -- I can listen to it the entire way through without wanting to skip any tracks (although I do dislike "She Makes Me").
Sheer Heart Attack is probably the band's first mature album, in which they married the Led Zeppelin-influenced crunch of their eponymous debut, and the sonic gimmickry and thematic ambition of its follow-up, Queen II.
And when they cut loose and actually rocked out ("Now I'm Here", "Brighton Rock"), few of their peers could match their power--something that many critics, alienated by Mercury's fondness for the grand gesture, nowadays mostly choose to forget.
