Albuminuria -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Albuminuria is a (Click link for more info and facts about pathological) pathological condition where (A simple water-soluble protein found in many animal tissues and liquids) albumin is present in the (Liquid excretory product) urine.
The (Either of two bean-shaped excretory organs that filter wastes (especially urea) from the blood and excrete them and water in urine; urine passes out of the kidney through ureters to the bladder) kidneys normally filter out large molecules from the urine, so albuminuria can be an indicator of damage to the kidneys.
The (A syndrome characterized by edema and large amounts of protein in the urine and usually increased blood cholesterol; usually associated with glomerulonephritis or with a complication of various systemic diseases) nephrotic syndrome usually results in the excretion of about 3.0 to 3.5 grams per 24 hours.

Angiotensin II receptor blockade in diabetic nephropathy
Diabetic nephropathy is a clinical syndrome characterized by persistent albuminuria, increasing arterial blood pressure, a relentless decline in GFR and highly elevated risk for cardiovascular morbidity (1) and mortality (2; 3).
Albuminuria remained unchanged in the placebo group, but was significantly decreased by 24% and 38% during treatment with 150 mg and 300 mg, respectively.
Albuminuria in the placebo period was 1156 (643-2080) mg/24 hours (geometric mean; 95% CI) and was significantly reduced by 33% (12-51; 95% CI) by losartan 50 mg, 44% (26-57) by losartan 100 mg, 45% (23-61) by enalapril 10 mg and 59% (39-72) during treatment with enalapril 20 mg.

Thomas' Eclectic Practice of Medicine, 1907: Diseases of the Kidney: Albuminuria.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Etiology.—The terms albuminuria and Bright's disease were used synonymously for a number of years, and to detect albumin in the urine was proof sufficient for a diagnosis of nephritis.
Dietetic Albuminuria is that form where albumin appears in the urine after the ingestion of certain articles of food, notably eggs, cheese, and pastry, or any full meal, especially where digestion is faulty or where severe exertion takes place immediately after a meal.
Albuminuria due to fever and hemic changes is nearly always transient, and disappears with the subsidence of the fever.

Albuminuria normally refers to greater than 300 mg/d of albuminuria, with the term microalbuminuria being used to describe smaller degrees of albuminuria (ie, 30-300 mg/d).
Although albuminuria can be detected in a semiquantitative fashion using urine dipsticks, such dipstick tests are relatively insensitive because they cannot detect levels of albuminuria that are less than 300-500 mg/d.

Tresorie - ALBUMINURIA IN CHILDREN [Albuminuria In Children]
Albuminuria, we know, may be produced in children from a variety of causes; the rarest causation, however, is, I think, due to pressure on the renal veins; but let the causative agent be what it may, I believe albuminuria should always be viewed with gravity.
Physiological albuminuria, however, is a term which has fund so much favor with the profession generally, that whatever the belief may be, it-the term-will, in al probability, remain in vague.
The causes of "Albuminuria in Children" are many, are unforeseen, and it appears to me quite impossible to treat of it prophylactically.

BY WILLIAM W. ALBUMINURIA in children is frequently overlooked, especially in private practice, in cases presenting none of the well-known characteristic symptoms usually accompanying the disease.
The common cause of albuminuria in children is Bright's disease as a sequela of the acute infections diseases so frequent in childhood.
By this is meant a renal albuminuria with absence of casts and all characteristic signs of Bright's disease or any other disease, the victim being to all intent and purpose in perfect health.

Microalbuminuria, an excess of the urinary protein albumin in urine, is increasingly recognized as a novel and early sign of the onset of diabetic nephropathy, the damage caused to kidneys by diabetes.
Differing types of albuminuria and outcomes of these varying forms as well as the propensity of damage of each urinary protein will also be discussed.
The session concludes with a discussion over the pharmacoeconomics of prevention, with data from the RENAAL and IRMA2 trials indicating that both early and late intervention with strategies that lower blood pressure and albuminuria have a significant beneficial economic impact, and that earlier detection is key.

“Research suggests that albuminuria may be a sign that a woman has problems in the lining of her blood vessels,” says Dr. David Warnock, President, National Kidney Foundation and Director of Nephrology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Albuminuria is the first sign of kidney disease, when damage to the kidney causes the protein albumin to leak into the urine.
Recent research has suggested that people with albuminuria may also be at higher risk of stroke, heart attack and heart failure, perhaps because albuminuria serves as a sign of overall blood vessel problems.
