The balloon fiesta began as a small gathering of 13 balloons in 1972, but has grown each year since, and today is the largest balloon convention in the world.
Balloon Fiesta Park from which the balloons are launched is located on the northern edge of the city.
In 2005, the Anderson-Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum was opened on the grounds, it recounts the last three decades of the convention as well as a general history of ballooning.

On the weekend of 5-7 October 2001, Elaine and I traveled to Albuquerque, New Mexico to see the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.
Thanks to the unique air circulation patterns above the Rio Grande valley, the balloons were able to float northward at upper levels and southward at lower levels, allowing them to land in the same field where they lifted off.
