The Upfield railway line is a suburban electric railway in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, Australia.
The future of the line was in serious doubt in the late 1980s and early 1990s with proposals for the line to be converted into a light rail line or even closed.
However, the future of the line was secured in 1994 with the upgrading of the signalling, closure or upgrade of the numerous level crossings, and duplication of the track between Merlynston and Gowrie.

Railways subsequently spread inland from the east coast ports of Brisbane, Maryborough, Bundaberg, Gladstone, Rockhampton, Mackay, Bowen, Townsville, Cairns and Cooktown.
It was a horse-drawn tramway from the port of Goolwa on the Murray River to an ocean harbour at Port Elliot in 1854.
In 1937 the Trans-Australian Railway was extended to Port Pirie and the broad gauge railway from Adelaide to Redhill was extended to Port Pirie, reducing one break of gauge between Adelaide and Perth, but creating a three-gauge railway station, until the standadisation of the line to Broken Hill and the Adelaide-Crystal Brook line.

As well, in places such as Korumburra, where the railway ran alongside the cemetery, and in winter the roads were just a bog, and thus impassable, funerals were conducted by loading the coffin onto a railway trolley, and wheeling it from the town to the cemetery, with the mourners walking along the track behind it.

A railway reached Wagga Wagga in 1878 and, in spite of the resistance of some Wagga Wagga people who wanted it to go no further south, was extended to Albury.
The break of railway gauge made this a strategically important crossing place during the Second World War, and there was a concentration of defence force activity in the area.
Both the Commonwealth and the two State Governments established Albury Wodonga as a National Growth Centre in 1973 and a Ministerial Council was formed to oversee the project, which ended in 1989.

Wangaratta is a city of about 19,000 people in the northeast of Victoria, Australia, about 230 km (150 mi) from Melbourne along the Hume Highway, with Benalla 45 km (25 mi) to the southwest, and Albury-Wodonga 72 km (40 mi) to the northeast.
It is located at the junction of the Ovens and King rivers which flow from the Victorian alps.
The station is on the main railway line between Sydney and Melbourne and is served by V/Line services between Melbourne and Albury as well as a twice daily Countrylink XPT service in both directions between Melbourne and Sydney.

Construction of the 112-kilometre railway line from Bandiana to Cudgewa started in 1887, and continued in stages until 1921.
Used for carrying passengers, timber and agricultural products, the line was of national significance as a transport line used in the building of Hume Dam, military train loops to Bonegilla (1940-1945) and migrant trains to Bonegilla (1947—1961).
The station was a junction for a spur line constructed to the Mitta junction in the 1930s for Hume Dam construction.

Planned to eventually extend from Wodonga to Cudgewa — and provide access to Lake Hume and historic old Tallangatta, plus superb views of the Upper Murray and the Alps — the Rail Trail will ensure something of a metamorphosis for a branch line started in 1887 and officially closed on 1 March 1981.
In 1887 contract No. 2663, for the 14.5-mile first section from Wodonga to Huon's Lane, was awarded to E. Barkly and Co. In 1888 R. Thornton and Co was awarded contract No. 3492 for the 11-mile 66-chain next section to Tallangatta.
Between 1930 and 1932 Barker's original line between Ebden and mileage post 206 was relocated to higher ground, Huon Lane Station was rebuilt 59ft higher and a 1866ft long concrete and steel bridge was built over Sandy Creek.

The panel also compared Albury and Wodonga (populations 42,500 and 31,500 respectively) with other towns along the Hume Highway such as Goulburn in NSW (21,500) and Wangaratta in Victoria (20,000).

Parklands Albury Wodonga is a cross border, non profit community organization that has been working in partnership with the local community since the late 1990's to develop the High Country Rail Trail.
The original expression of interest to develop the disused Wodonga to Cudgewa railway line into a rail trail was submitted by parklands to the Victorian State Government in 1993.
The land along the former railway line from Old Tallangatta to Cudgewa is public land.

I'm at the home of Robert and Betty Price in Bethanga, near Albury, which is on the border between Victoria and New South Wales.
As we drive, we follow the Trans-Australia Railway and pass through Pimba, where the road splits and one branch leads north to Woomera, the largest community near the eclipse path in that area.
As we drive back to Albury, we get a few periods of rain, but not enough to end the drought.

As it was the second last night of the trip we decided to eat out, and had a good old-fashioned roast of the day at the nearby Pub.
For the light sleepers it was not the best spot to camp, as it was right beside the highway and railway line.

Knowing that the Jeff Kennet governemnt was busy closing railway lines I decided to take advantage of the cheap pass to spend two weeks of my university holidays backpacking around the state.
Unfortunately, on arrival at Albury, we had to wait a long time for a change of driver due to rules about driving times.
Now over the border, I was able to obtain my railpass, but then had to wait at an hour for the late train to cross from Albury to Wodonga so we could catch it onwards to Melbourne.
