  HPL: Albus Dumbledore
Dumbledore is an old English word for bumblebee, according to JKR, who says that she imagines him wandering around the castle humming to himself.
Considered by many the greatest wizard of modern times, Dumbledore is particularly famous for his defeat of the dark wizard Grindelwald in 1945, for the discovery of the twelve uses of dragon's blood, and his work on alchemy with his partner, Nicolas Flamel.
Dumbledore did not work on the Philosopher's Stone with Flamel, or more precisely, he didn't work on the Stone which has kept Flamel alive for six hundred years (since Dumbledore hadn't been born when that Stone would have had to have been created).

Albus Dumbledore - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dumbledore was the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Dumbledore's extraordinary magical talents were apparent from an early age, as later described by the elderly Griselda Marchbanks, Head of the Wizarding Examinations Authority, who personally examined the school-age Dumbledore for his N.E.W.T. exams in Charms and Transfiguration.
Dumbledore's death is foreshadowed at the start of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, where he first appears with a burnt and flened hand, a result of his recovery and destruction of a ring that was an heirloom of Voldemort's grandfather Marvolo Gaunt and was serving as one of Voldemort's Horcruxes.

Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore Born 1844 is a character in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series - the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and one of the most powerful wizards in the world.
Dumbledore does not give importance to the so-called "purity of blood" and believes that an individual's choices reflect his character rather than his birth, blood, or family, saying "it matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be." Voldemort angrily refers to Dumbledore as "champion of commoners, muggles and mudbloods.".
Dumbledore was twice dismissed from his position as Headmaster, the first time during Harry's second year at Hogwarts, when Lucius Malfoy persuaded the school's twelve governors to remove him in the wake of attacks by a basilisk on people in the school.

Albus Dumbledore: The Greatest Headmaster   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The name Albus is from the Latin word albus ("white"), a frequently used symbol for good; "Dumbledore," which means "bumblebee," was picked by the author because she can see him humming while strolling along the halls of Hogwarts.
Throughout the series Dumbledore is portrayed as a wizard with modern/reformist ideas about blood purity, and the rights of Muggles, part-humans, and non-humans.
Dumbledore himself destroys a second Horcrux, an old ring, and is (by popular view) killed by Snape after being weakened while attempting to find a third.

Dumbledore need the mirror to be shown to harry so that harry will know how to face it and so he shift it around.
I think that DUmbledore knew something was up, but I also agree with a previous post that they put the Mirror at the end of the "quest" after there was an attempt to steal it from Gringotts.
So, if Dumbledore already knew that Tom Riddle was connected to the first time the chamber was opened, and he knew that Tom Riddle was Lord Voldemort, then he would probably realize that the chamber opening this time had to do with Voldy.

Dumbledore is perhaps the biggest mystery throughout the series.
Lucius Malfoy is a known Death Eater (Dumbledore certainly knows it, even if Fudge doesn't), and Narcissa (Black) Malfoy is not exactly perfect, yet Dumbledore accepts Draco into the school and increases his wizarding knowledge, KNOWING it could easily be used against him in the near future.
Dumbledore understands that it is a powerful thing for a person to be indebted to you; Draco will "owe" Dumbledore his education (although he probably will never admit it), and Dumbledore understands how advantageous that can become to the Order.
