List of monarchs of Northumbria - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Northumbria, a kingdom of Angles in northern England, was initially divided into two kingdoms, Bernicia and Deira.
In 670, Aelfwine, the brother of the childless King Ecgfrith, was made king of Deira; by this point the title may have been used primarily to designate an heir.
Aelfwine was killed in battle against Mercia in 679, and there was not another separate king of Deira until the time of Norse rule.

After Oswine of Deira was killed by King Oswiu of Northumbria in 651, Aethelwald became king.
Penda was defeated, perhaps in large part because of this desertion, and afterward Aethelwald seems to have lost Deira to Alchfrith, who was installed there by the victorious Oswiu.
Although he allied himself with the pagan Penda, Aethelwald was nevertheless a pious Christian and was remembered for his generosity towards St Chad, to whom he granted land for a monastery.

Oswiu was the son of Æthelfrith and brother of Oswald, whom he succeeded in Bernicia and Deira in 642 after the Battle_of_Maserfeld, but Oswine, a relative of Edwin, took control of Deira in ''c.''644.
At Gilling in 651, he plotted the murder of Oswine and a few years later took possession of Deira, thus once more reuniting Bernicia and Deira into the kingdom of Northumbria.
Oswald appears to have consolidated his power by the aid of the Roman_Church and by a series of judicious matrimonial alliances.

The Heroic Age: The Ripon Connection? Willibrord, Wilfrid, and the Mission to Frisia
Bosa of Whitby was made Bishop of York for Deira, and Eadhæd, the former personal priest of King Oswiu, was made Bishop of Lindsey (HE 4.12).
Further, St. Willehad, who came to Frisia as a missionary in the time of King Alhred of Northumbria and used Echternach as a base, appears to be a kinsman of Beornrad and therefore of Willibrord and Alcuin (Wood 2001: 90-91).
Wilgils, possibly a layman at the time, sent his son to be educated by the victor of the synod at a monastery supported by King Alchfrith [32].

The same desire to obtain the prayers of the living for the souls of the departed is manifested alike in the wording of the land charters and in the earliest stone monuments.
The cross erected at Bewcastle in Cumberland about 671, in honour of the Northumbrian king Alchfrith, has a runic inscription asking prayers for his soul.
Religious communities as early as the first half of the eighth century banded themselves together in associations pledged to recite the psalter and offer Masses for their deceased members, and this movement which spread widely in Germany and on the Continent had its origin in England.

It was around this time that, owing to the influence of St. Wilfrid who had been established at Ripon by King Alchfrith of Deira, that a great divide was forming in the Northumbrian Church.
