The DEA museum's "history of drugs" ignores centuries of holistic use of plant-based medicines, and alleges that America has had a series of "drug epidemics," the first of which began in the 1850's and lasted until 1914.
Sean Fearns, the director of the DEA's museum, told me he joined the DEA because it was a good career move, and because he believes "illegal drugs are a terrible threat to society."
The museum's presentation gives credence to marijuana advocates' contention that cannabis prohibition was the result of Anslinger's need to provide employment for out-of-work alcohol prohibition agents, coupled with racist attitudes against Asians, Hispanics and blacks.

The House of Delegates of the Association passes a resolution stating: "Resolved, The American Medical Association opposes the use of alcohol as a beverage; and be it further Resolved, That the use of alcohol as a therapeutic agent should be discourages." By 1928, physicians make an estimated $40,000,000 annually by writing prescriptions for whiskey." [Ibid.
In fact, a distant descendant of Hippocrates' prescriptions was the use of antimony salts in elixirs (alcoholic solutions) advocated by Basilius Valentius in the middle of the 15th century and by the medical alchemist Phillippus Aureolus Paracelsus (born Theophrastus Bombast von Hohenheim, in Switzerland, 1493-1541).
He launched a vigorous campaign to turn the tide against the decriminalization and legalization forces, calling for a “War on Drugs” in the same manner that his predecessor Lyndon Johnson had called for a “War on Poverty.”
