Topic: Alcovy River

  New Georgia Encyclopedia: Ocmulgee River
Southeast of Atlanta, the rivers flow into the impoundment of Lake Jackson and emerge as the Ocmulgee River, which joins the Oconee River 241 miles downstream to form the Altamaha.
To the Okmulgees the river was known as Ochese-hatchee, or Ochese Creek, which in turn spawned the name that the English traders gave the confederation of tribes—the "Creek people" or Creeks.
Commercial river navigation of this era depended upon log rafts loaded down with field and farm produce and guided by pole-handling crews who rode their lumber "down to Darien," where it could be sold to sawmills.

Alcovy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The Alcovy River starts in eastern Gwinnett County and winds southward through Walton and Newton counties before tumbling spectacularly across Factory Shoals and into Lake Jackson, where it meets the Yellow and South Rivers to form the Ocmulgee.
The stretch of river just south of Covington is absolutely littered with deadfalls, and anyone attempting to float this stretch better be prepared to spend as much time hauling your vessel over trees as fishing.
While the Alcovy just north of Lake Jackson is not as interesting or as desolate as the swampy section, it is probably a better bet for the average fisherman.

The Alcovy’s watershed is located within the Altamaha River basin, which drains into the Atlantic Ocean south of Savannah and north of Brunswick, Georgia.
The Alcovy originates in Gwinnett County as a spring that quickly grows into a river with a gradient approximately thirty feet per mile in the first fifteen miles.
The waters of the Alcovy, along with the Yellow and South Rivers and Tussahaw Creek, feed Lake Jackson, a reservoir that is a popular fishing and boating spot and an ever increasingly popular place to build a home.

Per the way upstream Alcovy River gauge at north of Grayson (located about 6 miles below the Upper Upper Alcovy River/Creek run) http://ga.waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?site_no=02208150, the Alcovy River is HUGE at that upstream location so this weekend you should have a lot more water than 1.2 below the bridge at Factory Shoals on Alcovy River.

River Largemouths   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
River largemouths look different from lake bass- they are leaner and in much better shape from spending their lives in current.
Georgia's rivers and streams are normally still low and relatively clear this time of year, and bass tend to stay in their summertime haunts until morning frosts become consistent, which is normally in November to December.
Some river fishermen use oversize lures in the fall, since the forage fish have grown a bit larger since the summer, but I generally use the same lure sizes or even downsize a bit, since the bass may not be as hungry and the water visibility is normally quite good.
