ALAN ALDA (Narration) A subject is told his emotional reactions to a story are to be measured.
ALAN ALDA (Narration) The idea is that memory consists of all the bits and pieces of an experience - the sights, the sounds, the emotions - with each fragment stored in areas of the brain responsible for handling that particular sensation.
ALAN ALDA (Narration) Dan Schacter emphasizes there's a long way to go before this first faint trace of a false memory could be turned into a practical test that could be used, for instance, in a courtroom.

Granted, he didn’t exactly put it that way last week in announcing that six of the show’s principal actors, including Dylan McDermott and Lara Flynn Boyle, won’t be aboard this fall when “The Practice” embarks on its eighth season on ABC.
Similarly, Hawkeye Pierce was the linchpin of “M*A*S*H.” It didn’t matter whether he cavorted with Trapper John or B.J. Hunnicutt, answered to Henry Blake or Sherman Potter, or had Frank Burns or Charles Winchester III as a foil.
Bobby Donnell (Dylan McDermott) and Helen Gamble (Lara Flynn Boyle) may be insufferable and annoying, but without them, “The Practice” is a just another legal drama -- and a stale one at that.

Maybe I am easily amused but I thought that the mostly scripted, live “presidential” debate between Jimmy Smits, a liberal democrat, and Alan Alda, a moderate Republican, on West Wing Sunday night was better in terms of content and substance than any real presidential debate I have ever seen.
This was probably a function of Alan Alda’s character calling for a change in his opening statement that did away with formal procedures and permitted a real give and take with the candidates probing each other’s positions without having to worry about the timer’s bell.
In this situation, the moderator did ask questions and occasionally had to serve as a referee, but he generally let the candidates dictate the pace and subject matter.
