Aldabra's darkest hour came in the mid-1960s when plans were hatched to turn the atoll into a gigantic aircraft carrier.
Aldabra is situated in the extreme south-west of the Seychelles archipelago, 600 km east of Africa, 400 km north-west of Madagascar and 1,100 km south-west of Seychelles main population centre, Mahé; in the granitic group of islands.
Aldabra Fody is particularly distinctive, males being the most attractive of all fodies, possessing a bright scarlet head, neck and upper breast, which is sharply demarcated from the sulphur yellow belly.

Aldabra is a dependency of the Seychelles in the Indian Ocean.
Aldabra was part of the British Indian Ocean Territory from 1965 to 1976 During this time there were controversial but unrealized plans to develop the atoll as a military base, this was condemned by conversationalist who saw the development as being catastrophic to the survival of the islands species.
Today Aldabra is the refugee and home to a flourishing population of turtles and an indication of the increase is the number of untagged individuals that have begun making it ashore in the last few years.

Aldabra is of volcanic origin and is estimated to have risen out of the sea only 50 000 years ago, a mere moment in geological terms, and all life has arrived or evolved here since.

Aldabra is a huge atoll half way between the Seychelles and the Comoros Islands, in the open Indian Ocean.
Although there have been previous sightings of Dugongs around Aldabra multiple sightings in such a short period of time is unheard of.
In response to this important sighting Seychelles Islands Foundation feel it is crucial to initiate a scientific research project to study the dugong on Aldabra and contribute to its conservation worldwide.

 Evolution and History of the Giant Tortoises of the Aldabra Island Group
This genus was found on Madagascar, the Comoros, Glorieuse, the Aldabra group (Aldabra, Assumption, Astove and Cosmoledo), Farquhar and the Seychelles group of islands.
Figures from Aldabra are very incomplete and only small snapshots are available, these include the export of 2,400 tortoises from Seychelles in 1826 and two ships in 1842 collecting 1,200 from Aldabra.
Rats and cats are present but the dramatic population growth on Aldabra has occurred in the presence of both these mammal species so their presence does not preclude establishment of tortoise populations.
