A long time ago, on a cold and misty autumn morning, a farmer from Mobberley was crossing the Edge in order to sell his beautiful milk-white mare at Macclesfield market.
When the farmer reached the Thieves' Hole he was amazed to see the old man waiting for him although he was an old man no more but a tall, proud wizard holding a staff in his hand.
The reference to the milk-white mare is significant as this was a sacred animal to the Celts who had a strong horse-cult and believed Celtic kings were born from a white mare at their coronation.

There are stunning views looking towards Manchester, Stockport and towards the Peak District from the edge, although walking is not that easy in some places due to the Oak and Beech tree roots, and rocks that cross the paths.
Alderley Edge is linked to another National Trust Property, Hare Hill which is a woodland garden known for it's rhododendrons, although they do not allow dogs in that particular property.

When you have visited Alderley Edge, you leave with a great sense of calming, and you will feel an inward tranquillity in yourself.
If you decide to visit Alderley Edge, you should bring cameras and camcorders as when we visited; we saw signs and markings which were very strange.
We both agreed that she was unusual… I mean… an old lady wondering around the woods in Alderley Edge on her own… not much of a guard dog beside her… bustling along on her own… but what was strange was that when we both turned round to look at her again… she had disappeared!!!

We have permission to cap and clear a shaft at Stormy Point as the NT want the fill to repair erosion damage, provided the fill is “clean”.
There was a very interesting series of lectures about the Edge in the autumn which covered geology, natural history, buildings, the mines, personal recollections and folk history.
There may not be any major projects like Bear Pit or the Hough Level but there are a lot of small projects and, during the last year or so, at least five sections of mine passage have been re-entered for the first time since they were closed by the miners!
