 Kingsclere - Heritage & Genealogy
A light railway was one built to lower constructional standards than a main line railway with an axle loading limited to 8 tons and a speed limit of 25 mph.
The railway would therefore have provided an efficient and cheap means of carrying the malt produced in the village to the London breweries and improved the maltsters' competitiveness.
This led to a flurry of railway construction including the Basingstoke and Alton Light Railway although very few such independent railways were constructed and the Treasury provision of a million pounds for loans was only ever tapped for £200,000.

The local railway station is located at Aldermaston Wharf, approximately 2 km to the north.
The site is 1.5 km from the mainline station and less than 2 km from the Town Centre, which is favourable for the encouragement of cycling and walking as alternative means of transport.
The crossing of Footpath 1 Aldermaston by the new access road needs to be carefully designed with the speed of the vehicles kept to a minimum.

 Basingstoke's Railway History in Maps
On subsequent maps, stations are marked by blobs on the lines, and when these stations first appear on the maps, letters are used in conjunction with a key beneath each map to indicate the name of each station.
On the other, the nationalised railway was organised on a regional basis, with the regional boundaries generally being drawn in the same places as the boundaries between the earlier companies.
A mural on the station calls it Winchfield and Hartley Row, which I suspect to be a mistake, as the Hampshire Chronicle report of the first train to Basingstoke calls this station Winchfield and Shapley Row.

Core services could operate from the town centre and railway station via the A340 Aldermaston Road to North Hampshire Hospital/Park Prewitt and via A33 Reading Road/Chineham District Centre with a link through Popley around which the development areas would be focused.
It is proposed that traffic signals be introduced at the A340/A339 Aldermaston Road roundabout, and feasibility work has also been undertaken regarding the junction of the A340 and Priestly Road (north) at The Lodge.
The location of the North Popley development to the eastern edge of the A340 offers the opportunity to reshape the junction of Aldermaston Road and Priestly Road, the main access to the hospital and adjacent sites.

There's nearly always a warm welcome and a cold beer; it's cheap and easily accessible, and physical confrontations are limited to the field of play and not the local railway station or assorted city centre pubs.
Elsewhere Redingensians, Thatcham, Tadley and Aldermaston all continue to ply their trade in the lower leagues and prove that the grassroots game is still alive and kicking in the aftermath of the post World Cup winning euphoria.
Newbury are faring considerably better in the same section and could clinch promotion to the rugby equivalent of the Championship if they hold their nerve in the frantic final weeks.
