  Alderney Railway - A History of the Railway
The Alderney Railway was constructed in the 1840s by the British Government to convey stone from the eastern end of the Island to build the breakwater and the Victorian forts.
The railway continued in its mineral carrying capacity for the remainder of the 19th century.
JT Daly remained with the Alderney Railway until the early 1990s but due to its limited use and high cost of maintenance was subsequently sold to the Pallot Steam Museum in Jersey.

Alderney is the third largest of the Channel Islands, and though it is the most northerly, is curiously the closest to France, which is only 6 miles away.
A standard gauge railway was built to serve a quarry during construction of this breakwater, and is still in operation today, purely as a tourist attraction.
The railway owns two carriages of a London Underground train, and these are hauled by a diesel; the steam loco having been sold due to rising maintenance costs.

Weird and wonderful whiskers were on proud display with Alderney Week medals and liquid prizes for the longest, the widest, the trendiest, the looniest and the most colourful beards grown specifically for the occasion.
Led by the town crier, Miss Alderney and her entourage and the Alderney Week Team, a half-mile long crocodile of around 2,500 people — most with burning torches held high — meandered through St. Anne’s from Royal Connaught Square to the Butes in paganish ritual where the torches fuelled a 20-ft high bonfire.
Alderney Week is believed by very many — including Ray — to have been the most imaginative and triumphant yet.

Alderney's Braye harbour is picturesque and is protected by the 3,000 feet break-water built by the British to protect the Navy in the 19th century and now maintained by Guernsey.
The tide in an area south of Alderney known as the Race, runs at up to 11 knots and up to nine knots in the stretch of water between Alderney and Burhou called the Swinge.
The island also has the only functioning railway in the Channel Islands which was used to transport the thousands of tons of granite to build the breakwater and the forts.

The early history of railways in Northern Ireland is closely tied up with that of the Republic of Ireland.
There are no railways on the island today, but there was once a standard gauge railway (not narrow gauge as suggested by some sources) running for some 22 miles (35km) along the length of the island chain from Somerset to St George.
There are no railways in the territory, but the Spanish railway line to Algeciras was built in the late 19th Century by a British company to serve the needs of the garrison.

But they certainly were not impressed by the ever interfering and re-appearing Cheeky Girls, who, it is claimed, were illegal immigrants but were absolutely determined to make it big time, whatever it took, despite having been unceremoniously sent off stage, not once, but several times.

Although this ceased to be used for the transport of stone in the 1960s, in recent years since it was leased to the Alderney Railway Society for their passenger trains it has become a tourist attraction.
From time to time the length of the track from Mannez quarry to the harbour is sprayed with weed killer, but is otherwise little disturbed.
A number of interesting plants are found in the banks either side and, between the infrequent sprayings along the bed of the track.

Our one hour flight today at 12.25pm is by Rockhopper - a new Alderney based airline - and the company\'92s proud boast is that it boards its customers by name and not number.
On arrival at Alderney at 1.25pm we transfer by pre-booked taxi to the privately owned Belle Vue Hotel (3-star standard), our base for the next three nights.

This is a guide arranged by organisation to the various units and individual cars that are currently in private preservation.
Currently on display at the museum in Covent Garden is a City and South London railway locomotive, number 13 and one of the original CandSLR 'padded cell' coaches, car number 30.
They are numbers 10177 and 11177 and arrived at their current home in 1987 from previous use by the North Downs Steam Railway at Chatham Historic Dockyard where they were hauled by steam and diesel locos.

It sailed into the harbour at high tide and a large gang of workmen were assembled to assist in offloading before the tide started to fall.
They were successful and Guernsey Railway Company Tramcar trailer No 3 took to the metals which ran between the seaports on the east coast of the Island.
This could be based on a Wickham four wheel gang motor trolley such as may be seen on The Alderney Railway.
