To enjoy all of this, we have to make a few stops to take a look at the impressive surroundings, glaciers, gravel- and sand-deserts, lakes and lava fields.
Our late lunch break allows us to roam about in the wilderness and experience the feeling of solitude in the vast expanses of the interior before continuing on across the northern part to the beautiful Aldeyjarfoss waterfall.
The first stop in the north is at Fosshóll, where we will get used to being back in inhabited lands again.

With some difficulty and the promise of' seeing the basalt columns of Aldeyjarfoss, a more frequently visited waterfall which is considered among the gems of Iceland, Ana persuaded us to leave.
I am happy that I saw Aldeyjarfoss with its rushing waters framed by vertical columns of smooth basalt, but I still prefer Hrafnabjargafoss, even though I never learned how to pronounce it.
Sitting isolated on the edge of the highlands - the last habitation before the vast and barren interior - is Miri Farm, our lunch stop.

Today we drive north via the highland desert Sprengisandur with its views of the distant glaciers Vatnajökull and Hofsjökull.
We visit the majestic waterfalls Aldeyjarfoss and Goðafoss.
We stay up north in Laugar for the next three nights at Fosshotel Laugar.

From the waterfall we drive into the valley Bárdardalur south, leaving the civilisation and heading to the desert of the highland region again.
Another waterfall will be visited, this time Aldeyjarfoss, decorated nicely with beautiful basalt columns.
On we go driving through grey sandy Sprengisandur road, with its views of the distant ice caps Vatnajökull and Hofsjökull.

Passing Vatnajokull and Hofsjokull glaciers, we locate our mountain hut accommodation and have a barbecue in the snow!
Continuing with tyres deflated, we pass glaciers and volcanoes as we head northwards and visit two spectacular waterfalls - Aldeyjarfoss and Godafoss.
Reaching Lake Myvatn we spend the next 2 days here, visiting geothermal features, taking short walks and, for those who wish, trying snowmobiling and ice go-carting!
