Topic: Aldrovanda

  CPN Samples
The morphology of the flower and the age of fossil seeds and pollen (Huber, 1961; Degreef, 1997) are indications of the archaic character of the plant.
Aldrovanda is able to survive for a long time only in areas with enough suitable habitats close to each other.

Aldrovanda has the same life form and growth strategy as temperate aquatic Utricularia species: a fast apical growth (1-2 whorls a day) and simultaneous basal decay.
Aldrovanda is spread irregularly and sparsely from temperate to tropical zones from Europe to Australia.
Aldrovanda is highly sensitive to competition with filamentous algae and higher aquatic plants that form denser stands.

Waterwheel plant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Waterwheel plant (Aldrovanda vesiculosa) is the sole species in the flowering plant genus Aldrovanda of the family Droseraceae.
In the wild, Aldrovanda turions have been observed to have a relatively low rate of successful sinking.
Aldrovanda is spread mainly through the movement of waterfowl - plants sticking to the feet of a bird are transported to the next aquatic destination on the bird's route.

In Australia, Aldrovanda is far less common than it once was, and it is designated a rare and threatened plant.
There are four main differences between the European temperate and the Australian (sub)tropical strains of Aldrovanda I have studied: the colors of the plants, their overwintering characteristics, the particulars of their of axillary buds, and their different sensitivities to boron.
As described for temperate Aldrovanda (Adamec, 1997) the cultivation water should be rather poor in N and P to control algal growth.

"Coastal Carnivores" Carnivorous Plants: Cultivation Tips: Aldrovanda
Eutrophication of the lakes through fertilization (runoff from farm land, industrial effluents) led to increases in nuisance algae, such as blue green cyanobacteria.
The best way to prepare this for Aldrovanda is to have other aquatic plants growing in the tank and conditioning the water well before adding Aldrovanda.
Aldrovanda generally prefers low light conditions, to help prevent the growth of algae, but it does like warm water.

Classification - Carnivorous Plant by Makoto Honda
Dionaea and Aldrovanda both possess a snap-trap, the most advanced prey trapping mechanism to be found among carnivorous plants.
Although Dionaea is a land plant while Aldrovanda is aquatic, they share a great deal of common features in their snap-trap mechanism.
Furthermore, Dionaea and Aldrovanda form a clade which is sister to Drosera.

Like the Venus Fly Trap, Aldrovanda vesiculosa is the only species in its genus (monotypic).
When conditions are favourable in the spring or summer (when the water temperature reaches 25ºC (77ºF)) Aldrovanda produces a single small five-petalled flower on a short scape.
Aldrovanda can grow well with moderate care in an aquarium where the water is aerated using a normal fish air pump, with water fleas or daphnia added to provide a food source.

Everyone who grows these plants successfully say you must grow them with other bog plants, such as Phragmites, Menyanthes, etc. The best source of information regarding this plant is the September 1997 issue of Carnivorous Plant Newsletter, published by the International Carnivorous Plant Society.
This entire issue is devoted to Aldrovanda and covers essentially every aspect of the plant.
The fossils this plant leaves behind are typically of its seed (although we know of one case of a fossilized leaf).
