In the News (Tue 14 Feb 12)

Aldus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Aldus Corporation (named after the 15th-century Venetian printer Aldus Manutius) was the inventor of the groundbreaking PageMaker software for the Apple Macintosh, a program that is generally credited with creating the desktop publishing (DTP) field.
PageMaker was released in July 1985, and relied on Adobe 's PostScript page description language.
PageMaker for the PC was released in 1986, but by then the Mac was already the de facto DTP platform, with Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop completing the suite of graphic design software.

Adobe PageMaker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
PageMaker was the first desktop publishing program, introduced in 1985 by Aldus Corporation, initially for the Apple Macintosh but soon after also for the PC.
The current version is PageMaker 7.0, released July 9, 2001, though updates have been released for the two supported platforms since.
While PageMaker is less powerful than InDesign or QuarkXPress, it is simpler to learn than those two packages and yet more powerful than Microsoft Publisher.

The logo is variation on the original logo from Aldus PageMaker and depicts Aldus Manutius, a student of Johannes Gutenberg and inventor of italics.
PageMaker and QuarkXPress were virtually equal, especially once PageMaker 5 added color seps, but momentum is hard to break, and QuarkXPress continued to gain market share, due largely to ignorance and mythology regarding PageMaker's capabilities.
PageMaker for the PC came out in 1986, but by then the Apple Mac was already established as the platform of choice for desktop publishing (DTP), with Quark XPress (1988) and Adobe Photoshop (1990) completing the suite of killer apps.

 Aldus Pagemaker
The PC version of Aldus PageMaker 4.0 carries desktop publishing to another rung on the evolutionary ladder.
PageMaker 4.0 now enables you to copy styles from one publication to another--a convenience when working with shorter publications and a necessity when compiling longer documents.
Aldus provides a major documentation package with PageMaker 4.0, but it isn't the easiest material to work with.

PageMaker would not only inhibit editing (although not layout) of that story, but when the writer had finished with the story in Word, PageMaker would automatically update the page, either right then or the next time the PageMaker file was opened.
PageMaker has long had a feature that Aldus calls Òmagic stretch.Ó Pressing the control key (command key on the Mac) while scaling an image forces the scale factor to jump only to the sizes that will look good, given the resolution of the printer and scanner.
Aldus has even stolen a march on Xpress with the ÒproxyÓ feature, which lets you pick any of the corners, sides or center as the reference point for measurements and adjustments.

 PageMaker for Desktop Publishers
Aldus Manutius (or Aldo Manuzio) was born in Bassiano, Italy, in 1449.
Aldus' grandson, Aldus the Younger, took over the press upon the death of Paulus (1574) and subsequently closed it in 1590 when he was appointed director of the Vatican Press.
Aldus adopted the device as his printer's mark in January 1501 in the second volume of Poetae Christiani veteres, and subsequently used it in at least 19 versions.

 Paul Brainerd : MyFonts
Founder of Aldus Corporation, which was named after the 15th century Venetian printer Aldus Manutius.
The July 1985 release of Aldus PageMaker for the new Apple Macintosh computer revolutionized publishing, which could now be done on a fraction of the budget of before.
As well as the Mac, PageMaker relied for its success on Adobe ’s PostScript page description language, and the printer in which it was embedded, the Apple LaserWriter.

Aldus has provided comprehensive documentation, including a tutorial--that provides an excellent learning tool for new users--a reference manual, and special manuals for tables and templates.
PageMaker emulates the layout artist's method by maintaining a permanent pasteboard area outside a document page, known as the "layout." The pasteboard is always saved in the document file.
PageMaker can produce Pantone and other popular types of color output for those who have access to a color printer or plan to have the output printed professionally.

Newsbytes News Network: Aldus ships first standalone Pagemaker addition - Infopublisher Database Addition   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
Aldus says it has made a number of enhancements, including: better control over in-line graphic images, necessary for the production of catalogs; added automatic reflow of stories when data or formats are changed; made the user interface easier to use; and added a new tutorial and expanded the documentation.
Aldus publishes three types of Additions: script Additions automate specific Pagemaker tasks; loadable Additions allow the user to write modules that perform more complex tasks than scripts; and standalone Additions rely on application-to- application communications.
Aldus recommends a 486-based PC with six to eight megabytes (MB) of system memory, an 80MB hard disk, a high resolution graphics display, and a mouse.

The last release of PageMaker 6 was 6.01 or the "enhancement pack" as it was called, which was supplied free of charge on CD to all registered owners of 6.0.
PageMaker is good at "placing" files (provided you have the correct filter installed) but it sometimes takes a short time from release of a new format until the filter is available (there is now a Word97/Word98 filter but not for older versions of PM).
PageMaker will import footnotes in a Word file as endnotes, and these can be run as separate text either as linked text blocks or frames on to individual pages.

Seybold Report on Desktop Publishing Vol 8, No 10   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
When it was first announced more than a year ago, PageMaker 5.0 was billed as a “Quark killer”—Aldus’s answer to the ongoing erosion of its installed base, particularly in the professional publishing community, as a result of competitive pressure from Quark Xpress.
Now Aldus has just announced and begun to ship an Aldus Addition called TrapMaker, which adds basic trapping features (on a par, it claims, with those in Xpress) to PageMaker 5.0.
According to Aldus, the TrapMaker Addition is intended to offer equal, if not better, control over trapping text and native graphics compared with the built-in trapping capabilities of Xpress 3.3.

ATPM 4.10 - Cider: Mr. Manutius, I Presume.
Even though PageMaker 3 didn’t have a text editor and you couldn’t rotate text worth a darn, I was struck by the program’s power.
Aldus was a friend to me. I was reassured at startup when the portrait of Aldus Manutius, Renaissance-era Italian inventor of italic type and the source for the company’s name, flashed on the screen when I launched PageMaker.
PageMaker, still the premier page layout software package in my mind, seemed to anchor its spot at the head of the class when Adobe purchased FrameMaker and eliminated more of the competition.

When Secrets Make Sense .::. joemarini.com
Let me give you a specific example: Quark had figured out how to allow text that had been flowed around page objects to be typed on a curved path while remaining editable, and do it in a very fast and responsive fashion.
This was a big deal back in 1991, and Aldus had not been able to figure this feature out.
Quark was able to beat PageMaker because Quark had solved hard problems that Aldus was unable to solve, and Aldus had nowhere else to turn to in order to get the answer before Quark just rolled over them.

Mac Design Online : The Mac Lane   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
PageMaker (the page-layout application now owned by Adobe) was originally developed by Aldus Corporation, and along with Apple's LaserWriter (the first Adobe PostScript laser printer), these two started what's now called (by old geezers such as Wilford Grimley and me) the Desktop Publishing Revolution.
As with almost all groundbreaking graphics applications, for years it was only available for the Mac, but eventually Aldus decided to put their focus on creating a Windows version of PageMaker.
Years later, when Aldus changed their focus to adding "long-document" capabilities to PageMaker, Quark found a way to extend the capabilities of QuarkXPress' power using XTensions (their name for add-on plug-ins that could be created by third-party developers to work seamlessly from within QuarkXPress).
