Ale - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ale is a beer style brewed from barley malt with a top fermenting brewers yeast that ferments quickly, giving a sweet, full body and a fruity, and sometimes a butter-like taste.
There is an American-style brown ale as well, created during the early 1980s by homebrewers, and most prominently commercially represented by Pete's Wicked Ale; it is similar to the English original, though substantially hoppier.
German ales tend to be fermented at a somewhat lower temperature, and have more body than British or Belgian ales due to differences in mashing process; the traditional German decoction mash tends to create more oligosaccharides to provide body to the beer.

Brewed at a lower temperature than ales, they are stored (or lagered, from "lager" in German) for up to 6 weeks before being sold.
Traditionally a strong beer, the alcohol content is increased by freezing the beer and removing the ice that forms, As alcohol has a lower freezing point than water, it's left behind in a higher concentration.
Ales differ from lagers as their yeast remains on the top of the fermenting liquid and they ferment at higher temperatures.

 Beer Styles: Old Ale
This type of strong ale constitutes the vast majority of all the commercially produced beers that might be called old ale today.
While American strong/old ales are generally amber to copper colored, many UK examples fit what British ale expert Mark Dorber refers to as the strong, mild type of old ale.
But perhaps the most notable of authentic old ales is Galeâs Prize Old Ale, a 9.5 percent ABV beer that is aged for a full year at the brewery before distribution.

This Ale Tastes Like Beer To Me (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab2.cs.unc.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
The most common question I hear about beer is: "What's the difference between beer and ale?" Many beer drinkers seem to be hazy about the distinction, a sure sign that brewers haven't done a good job of explaining their product.
At this time, a distinction (at least in England) arose between traditional unhopped "ales" (which were noble and good) and the newfangled foreign "beers" which were probably going to ruin civilization as they knew it.
Today, we speak of "ale" as a beer made with top fermenting yeasts at warmer temperatures, and "lager" as beer produced by bottom fermenting yeasts.

Kent is the region of England famed for its hops, but Pepys talks of Margate (in Kent) ale as though it is famous, so the difference seems already to have been lost by 1660.
Nowadays ale is used to refer to top fermented bitter (British) beers, as compared to bottom fermented lager (American, German, Australian, etc.) beers.
VI’s Parlt.) c 1524, ‘beer’ was commonly hopped; at present ‘beer’ is in the trade the generic name for all malt liquors, ‘ale’ being specifically applied to the paler coloured kinds, the malt for which has not been roasted or burnt; but the popular application of the two words varies in different localities.

Pale ale - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pale ale is a term used to describe a variety of beers which use ale yeast and predominantly pale malts.
Later in the second half of the nineteenth century, the recipe for pale ale was put into use by the Burton upon Trent brewers, notably Bass; ales from Burton were considered of a particularly high quality due to synergy between the malt and hops in use and local water chemistry, especially the presence of gypsum.
Saisons are considered to be a farmhouse ale, because saisons were originally brewed in farmhouses for farm workers who were entitled to a half dozen pints of ale or more throughout the workday during harvest season.

 Recreating Medieval English Ales
Ale, during this time, was a drink made from malted grains, water, and fermented with yeast.
Since ale was basic to the diet of ordinary people, each household required a large and steady supply; a household of five people might require about 1 1/4 gallons a day, or about 8 3/4 gallons a week.
After making the Debatable Brewer's Ale for Fish, we found that the ale was clear, and that it has lasted well for at least six months.

Ajaxian » ALE: Ajax Linking and Embedding
AJAX Linking and Embedding (ALE) provides the ability to embed rich content into an editable document and to then interact with and edit that content in much the same way as it is done with traditional office suites and applications in a desktop environment.
So, for example, if a user is editing some content such as a personal note or an email message, then she would be able to directly embed an AJAX spreadsheet into the note or email body and interact with the spreadsheet while remaining in the editing context of the note or email message.
As long as the spreadsheet component adheres to the ALE specification it could be fetched across the network, instantiated, and used regardless of the user’s location.

What Is Real Ale? (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab2.cs.unc.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Draught Real Ale is usually served from a hand-pump, and occasionally straight from the barrel.
The sad thing is that many breweries brew real ale, and then lose all their beer’s "real" character by filtering and pasteurization.
U-Brew beers are very close to Real Ale, as, although they are filtered, the pore size on the filters is relatively large.

ALE components are not limited to the components found in traditional office applications - they can include just about anything.
The first version of ALE is intentionally quite simple and specifies basic serialization/deserialization semantics, and a limited set of rules for components to register and interact with an implementation framework.
Thus when a user inserts an ALE component into a document that he is editing, the ALE framework is in fact creating an IFRAME into which the ALE component is loaded.

As one of the oldest styles of ales in the world there are many legends and folklore surrounding it.
Although Heather Ale has been brewed through the ages, it was in 1986 that Bruce Williams, a brewer and "homebrew" shop owner in Scotland, began making batches of Heather Ale using an old recipe.
Into the boiling bree of malted barley, sweet gale and flowering heather are added, then after cooling slightly the hot ale is poured into a vat of freash heather flowers where it infuses for an hour before being fermented in copper turns.
