The common names of Alectoris Chukar include chukar partridge, red-legged partridge, rock partridge, Indian hill partridge, chukka, chukkar, chukker, misspelled as chuker, chukor, chukore, chikone, kabk, kau-kau, keklik, nkpa, but known most commonly as just plain chukar.
Alectoris Chukar belong to a family of birds known as red-legged partridges which include French and spanish redlegs, Barbary partridge and Arabian red-legged partridges.
Alectoris chukar was introduced en masse during the 1930's and have established populations in all of the western states and into Canada.

Alectoris, is a genus of partridges with representatives in southern Europe, north Africa and Arabia, and across Asia to Tibet and western China.
Members of the genus, notably the Chukar and Red-legged Partridge, have been introduced to the United States, Canada, New Zealand and Hawaii.
A prehistoric species, Alectoris baryosefi, has been described from Early Pleistocene fossils found at 'Ubeidiya (Jordan valley), Israel.

They inhabit drier areas including bare stony hillsides as well as areas with low bushes and arable fields.
It is very similar to the Rock Partridge Alectoris graeca but is browner on the back, has a deeper white supercilium, a larger brown streak behind the eye and no fl along the base of the upper mandible.
There is also only a very small area where the two species occur together and, while the Chukar is found on Crete but not on mainland Greece, the reverse is the case for the Rock Partridge.
