		At the first Special Session of the UN General Assembly held in 1947, the politician and statesman Oswaldo Aranha began a tradition that has remained until today whereby the first speaker at this major international forum is always a Brazilian.
		Prior to this he had been superintendent (the equivalent of mayor) of the city of Alegrete, deputy chief of police in Porto Alegre and federal deputy.
		At Itamaraty, he began a programme of major reforms, putting Brazilian diplomacy on a course of constant political analysis of the international situation and the use of trade and other economic activities as instruments of Brazilian foreign policy.

		December 22, 1923, at Alegrete: Antonio Carvalho of the Brigada Militar murders Lieutenant Carlos Nobre of the Maragatos on the streets of Alegrete.
