In 1870 Ramón Baldorioty de Castro was elected Puerto Rican Deputy to the Spanish Cortes.
Gautier Benítez lived at a time in which no literary renewal was possible, and like all other Puerto Rican poets of that period followed the school of Nuñez de Arce.
José de Diego, author of Pomarrosas and Cantos de Rebeldía, and Luis Muñoz Rivera, author of Tropicales, may be said to close this era of the Island's literary and intellectual life.

His parents were Rodulfo Gautier and the well known Puerto Rican poet, Alejandrina Benítez de Gautier.

An apt pupil, Alejandrina in turn managed to get one of her stories included in the island's first printed collection of literary works by local writers, the Aguinaldo Puertorriqueño, published in San Juan in 1843.
Alejandrina also became, years later, mother, teacher and role model to the best loved poet of that century, José Gautier Benítez (1851-1880).
Lola is noted for having cut her hair and dressed in manly costume to be able to attend political revolutionary meetings, bringing repression and exile upon herself; in spite of which her works remain an important part of literature in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.

Maria Bibiana Benitez (December 10, 1783 – April 18, 1873) born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, was Puerto Rico's first known poetess and one of its first playwrights.
Her father Jose Benitez, was a lieutenant in the Spanish Army who on April 28, 1797 defended Puntilla against an English invasion and who was married to Juana Bautista Benitez.
In 1820, her brother Pedro Jose Benotez and his wife died and she took it upon herself to raise her orphaned niece Alejandrina Benitez de Gautier, who would in the future become a renowned poetess herself.
