Hidell was two years old when his mother died in what was eventually ruled an accident by the Alton County coroner; at the time, police suspected George Hidell had pushed his wife down a flight of stairs while intoxicated, but the prosecuting attorney cited a lack of evidence in declining to press charges.
Alek Hidell was arrested in New Orleans on April 5, 1989, at the age of thirteen, for transporting the records of a "numbers" gambling scheme in the service of Carlos Civello, a twice-convicted New Orleans-based racketeer.

Alek Hidell was born on July 4, 1976, in Alton, Illinois.
Alek Hidell's mother died when he was two years old, and, according to the Garcetti Report, police suspected at the time that Alek's father, George, may have killed her by pushing her down a flight of stairs.
Considering that Hidell was determined by a test to have an IQ of 140 or more, it is to be expected that Hidell could not stay interested in class and observant of school rules.

CITIZENS FOR TRUTH - THREE KILLINGS: AN OVERVIEW OF THE DECEMBER 2 CRIME SCENES
The police and D.A. say that after killing Baker, Alek Hidell retrieved his rifle, ran across the fifth floor to Stairwell #2 and took that stairwell to the basement, where he encountered LAPD Officer Jacob Powell.
The Garcetti Report fails to provide this important context for the encounter that is about to occur--that Powell was a rookie cop on his first solo assignment, and that as he traveled down the dark hallway alone he suddenly heard that the suspect was a cop-killer, a fl man with a rifle.
It is possible that Hidell was holding the rifle, but only because Hidell (a registered guest of the hotel) happened to come down to the basement area and came across a weapon that had been abandoned by the real assassin.
