  Alekos Alavanos
Alekos (Alexandros) Alavanos (Greek: Αλέκος Αλαβάνος) is a Greek politician, member of the Hellenic Parliament, former member of the European Parliament and president of the Synaspismos party of the radical left since 2004.
During the dictatorship of 1967-1974, Alavanos took part in the struggle against the Regime of the Colonels and was imprisoned for his political convictions.
In the 2004 Greek legislative election, Alavanos was elected MP in Athens.

Alekos (Alexandros) Alavanos (Greek: Αλέκος Αλαβάνος) is a Greek politician, member of the Hellenic Parliament, former member of the European Parliament and president of the Synaspismos party of the radical left since 2004.
During the military dictatorship of 1967-1974, Alavanos participated in the student movement against the regime ; as a result his military service deferment was revoked and he was briefly incarcerated in EAT/ESA.
In the 2004 Greek legislative election, Alavanos was elected MP in Athens.

It also said that Alavanos, in reply to a press question on the refugees from Lebanon, said that "all these families, which have been forced to abandon their homes under dramatic circumstances, under the relentless and inhuman bombings by Israel, must not suffer a second displacement, even for just a few days".

Long-time MP of the Coalition of the Left, Movements and Ecology (Synaspismos) party Alekos Alavanos on Monday took over the helm of the party from Nikos Constantopoulos, following his election with an overwhelming 58.5 percent majority of the vote at the closing session of the SYN Congress on Sunday.
Alavanos expressed full satisfaction with the Congress' proceedings, which he said were carried out in an impeccable manner and with full respect for the different views heard, but with clear-cut positions regarding SYN's role at the side of the forces of soceity that required the support of the Left.
The government's congratulations to Alavanos on his election were also expressed on Monday by government spokesman Theodoros Roussopoulos, along with the government's best wishes for a 'creative term'.

Finance Minister George Alogoskoufis on Friday received the leader of the Coalition of the Left, Movements and Ecology (Synaspismos) party Alekos Alavanos and briefed him on the acquisition of Turkey's Finansbank by the National Bank of Greece (NBG), Greece's largest and formerly state-run bank, in which the government remains a major shareholder.
Alavanos also pointed out that the increase in share capital will reduce the position of the bank's employee insurance funds and said that he had asked the finance minister to either support NBG's insurance funds or that the unsold stock be bought by the state.
On his part, Alogoskoufis stressed that the government had no additional information to that already available and that NBG now operated in the same way as all other private-sector banks, while noting that the deal was part of the bank's strategy of expansion in southeast Europe.

Alavanos stated that he was shaken up after the meeting he had with the town mayor stressing that everybody knows about the region from the stories taught in elementary school referring to the Wedding Feast at Canaan and the miracle performed by Jesus when he turned water into wine.
He also stressed that Greece’s position in the UN Security Council and the EU Council should be used to exert pressures for the solution of the Palestinian problem, stressing that it is the key-problem for peace in the Middle East.
