Aleksandrov attended school in Petrograd but while he was at school the name of the city in which he lived changed yet again and so by the time he left school in 1928 it was a Leningrad school from which he graduated.
Aleksandrov's doctoral thesis (more of a habilitation thesis) was presented in 1937 and in it he studied the topics of additive set functions and the geometrical theory of weak convergence.
Aleksandrov was appointed as Professor of Geometry at Leningrad University in 1937.

Aleksandr Danilovic Aleksandrov's father was the headmaster of a secondary school in St Petersburg and his mother was a teacher at the same school.
However Aleksandrov was taught mathematics in the Faculty of Physics by B N Delone.
Delone's interests in the geometry of numbers and the structure of crystals soon began to attract Aleksandrov at least as much as his work in physics which was supervised by V A Fok.

Aleksandr P. Aleksandrov, a hydroelectric expert and former Deputy Minister of Electric Power, died Monday, the press agency Tass reported today.
Aleksandrov was the chief Soviet expert in the construction of the Aswan Dam in Egypt in the 1960's.
Aleksandrov worked at a series of highway and bridge projects in Soviet Central Asia until 1948, when he was assigned to the Volga-Don Canal.

The second long-duration expedition to Mir was launched in February 1987 onboard the Soyuz TM-2 spacecraft an included commander Yuri Romanenko and flight engineer Aleksandr Laveikin.
The expedition started permanent presence of the Soviet cosmonauts in orbit, which would continue uninterrupted until April 1989.
The crew included, Syrian guest-cosmonaut and the flight engineer Aleksandr Aleksandrov, who replaced Aleksandr Laveikin in the long-term crew.
