 Russia - Literature
The middle period of the eighteenth century (1725-62) was dominated by the stylistic and genre innovations of four writers: Antiokh Kantemir, Vasiliy Trediakovskiy, Mikhail Lomonosov, and Aleksandr Sumarokov.
Other outstanding writers of the Age of Realism were the playwright Aleksandr Ostrovskiy, the novelist Ivan Goncharov, and the prose innovator Nikolay Leskov, all of whom were closely involved in some way with the debate over social commentary.
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, whose One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich (1962) also was a watershed work, was the greatest Russian philosophical novelist of the era; he was exiled from the Soviet Union in 1974 and eventually settled in the United States.

Indeed, similar in this sense to the Aleksandr Kuprin work "The Garnet Bracelet" that I was talking about a couple of weeks ago, Aksenov's novella uses the theme of music to portray feelings.
But, where Kuprin's work portrays musically feelings on an individual level, Aksenov's work uses music to portray feelings of the collective, that is, of everyone living in the apartment building.
Kuprin, I find, is not particularly well-known in the US, but is highly regarded in Russia.

Yama: The pit by A. I. Kuprin (Aleksandr Ivanovich) eBook by BookRags
It must not be thought, despite its locale, that Kuprin’s “Yama” is a picture of Russian prostitution solely; it is intrinsically universal.
All that is necessary is to change the kopecks into cents, pennies, sous or pfennings; compute the versts into miles or metres; Jennka may be Eugenie or Jeannette; and for Yama, simply read Whitechapel, Montmartre, or the Barbary Coast.
The detailism which crowds his pages is like the stippling of Whistler; or the enumerations of the Bible; or the chiselling of Rodin, that endows the back of the Thinker with meaning.

AllRefer.com - Russia - The Nineteenth Century | Russian Information Resource
The writers of that period owed a great debt to four men of the previous generation: the writers Aleksandr Pushkin, Mikhail Le rmontov, and Nikolay Gogol', and the critic Vissarion Belinskiy, each of whom contributed to new standards for language, subject matter, form, and narrative techniques.
Because of the enduring quality of their combination of pure literature with eternal philosophical questions, the last two are accepted as Russia's pr emier prose artists; Dostoyevskiy's novels Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov, like Tolstoy's novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, are classics of world literature.
Two more groups, the futurists and the acmeists, added new poetic principles at the start of the tw entieth century.
