Alexander Nevsky - free-definition   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
Nevsky was in charge of defending the northwest lands of Russia from Swedish and German invaders.
Nevsky faced the enemy on the ice of the Lake Chud (Чудское озеро in Russian) and crushed the Teutonic Knights during the Battle on the Ice on April 5, 1242.
Nevsky's great victory against the Teutonic Order apparently involved only a few knights killed rather than the hundreds claimed by the Russian chroniclers; decisive medieval and early modern battles were won and lost with small forces to modern eyes.

Aleksandr acquired the surname that commemorates his first victory--but was forced to retire from Novgorod just one year later, by the endlessly-squabbling town council, when he chose to depart rather than use military force to rule.
Aleksandr traveled to the Khan's court at Sarai to plead for his brother's life, and out of respect for Aleksandr the sentence of death was commuted to exile.
Nevsky made one more journey to Sarai in 1262, to convince the new Khan to rescind a new tax and military levy that was about to cause another revolt.

After 1237-1238, when the Mongols captured the city, burning the city to the ground and murdering the inhabitants, it recovered and became the capital of an independent principality.
In 1300 it was ruled by Daniil Aleksandrovich, the son of Alexander Nevsky, and a member of the Rurik Dynasty.
In January of 1905, they officially introduced the institution of the City Governor, or Mayor, in Moscow, and Aleksandr Adrianov became Moscow's first official mayor (current mayor is Yuri Luzhkov).

 Aleksandr Nevsky (1938)
An intentionally epic retelling of the pivotal 13th Century conflict between Russia and the Teutonic knights, Aleksandr Nevsky is rich in propaganda.
A significant problem for Aleksandr Nevsky is that because the arduous battle is so stunning in its impact, the remainder of the movie lies in shadow.
During the battle, indeed throughout the rest of the film, Aleksandr Nevsky paints a highly believable picture of Medieval society; the clothes are rough and functional, the buildings either solid towers or ramshackle huts and the weapons bluntly deadly.

It was during his later battle in 1242, that, with the help of an army of peasants, Nevsky repelled the advance of the Teutonic knights.
This is the battle that Eisenstein deals with in the film, in which Nevsky staged his "battle on the ice," a story known by all Russian schoolchildren, in which the German invaders, weighed down by armor and horses, drowned when the ice cracked during their retreat across Lake Peipus.

Alexander Nevsky, Sergei Eisenstein's landmark tale of Russia thwarting the German invasion of the 13th century, was wildly popular with home-grown audiences back in 1938, quite intentionally so, given the prevailing Nazi geopolitical advancement and destruction at the time.

Like many of Eisenstein's best films, Alexander Nevsky was conceived as a morale-booster, aimed at stirring up Russian patriotism.
It is set in the 13th century, but the villainous Teutonic Knights are obviously meant to represent the burgeoning threat of Hitler's hordes.
The saving turnaround for Nevsky is the battle of ice-covered Lake Peipus in 1242.
