You are very warm welcome to the Popov-Marconi Forum
Alexander Stepanovich Popov was born on March 16, 1859 in the village of Turinsk in the Ural Mountains.
Popov knew that Bose's instrument was very similar to the one he himself had been using for over a year at the Institute of Forestry to detect lightning discharges.
Popov believed in "science for the sake of science," not in "science for personal profit." Limiting the ability of others to make use of scientific discovery by filing for protective patents was a concept foreign to Popov.

 IEEE-USA Today's Engineer
Aleksandr Popov, an oft-overlooked figure in radio history, was born in the village of Turinsk, Russia, 16 March 1859.
Popov's vision was accurate, and though there is still some debate over the validity of the claim, Popov is said to have transmitted the words “Heinrich Hertz” from one building to another on the campus of St. Petersburg University on 24 March 1896.
In fact, Popov had begun to move away from radio research and towards X-rays when he noticed Marconi was getting a great deal of attention for a device remarkably similar to his own — a detail Popov was not shy about pointing out in local papers and meetings with colleagues.

Popov was the son of a village priest and planned to enter the priesthood, but his interests changed to mathematics and then to electrical engineering.
Learning of Hertz's work, in 1895 Popov constructed an apparatus that could register electrical disturbances due to lightning, and then suggested that it could be used for receiving man-made signals.
In 1896, he demonstrated the transmission of radio wave signals between different parts of the University of St. Petersburg.

But perhaps that was appropriate, because Popov has spent most of his career living and prospering outside the borders of his country.
But Popov will tell you that as long as he and his coach are together, he will never feel like a fish out of water, and on the second biggest stage in his sport, he proved that he was back in top form at age 31.
Popov has been focusing his training on the 50-meter event this year — an event in which he still holds the world record — and that final is on Saturday.

 A prizefight on the wireless - 20 May 1995 - New Scientist
It is also one hundred years since the Russian physicist Aleksandr Popov, a lecturer in physics at the Naval Engineering College at Kronstadt, near St Petersburg, first demonstrated a radio receiver to his fellow scientists.
The notion that the title really belongs to Popov is seen in the West as a piece of Stalinist propaganda that should have been discarded with the advent of glasnost.
Marconi and Popov were both experimenting in 1895 with radio receivers.

Swimming : No record, but victory for Thorpe
Jenny Thompson of the United States and Aleksandr Popov of Russia might have been eclipsed by younger athletes in individual events, but they still had more than enough speed and will to anchor their countries to victory in the 400-meter freestyle relays.
The 31-year-old Popov, whose personal odyssey has taken him from Russia to Australia and most recently to a 25-meter training pool in Switzerland, went next: holding the somewhat surprising lead his three junior teammates had granted him and touching the wall — bare chested and bare headed — well ahead of the American Jason Lezak.
Thompson won two relay gold medals in Barcelona in 1992; Popov swept the 50 and 100 freestyle events, putting an end to the reign of his American measuring stick, Matt Biondi.

The leadership of the International Olympic Committee will be also waiting to be proved right for deciding that Olympic baseball could do without the US team, and soccer without Brasil.
It looks like we can expect positive results from these Olympics, especially from Aleksandr Popov and Vyacheslav Ekimov, who, contrary to predictions, not only continued to the next Games, but have maintained their high level.
Another sport sure to bring us a medal is swimming, where we have Aleksandr Popov and young Stanislava Komarova.

Carl Lewis won two gold medals, swimmer Aleksandr Popov won two gold and two silver medals, and Derartu Tulu of Ethiopia won the 10,000m run to become the first female fl African Olympic champion.
And then there was the American Men’s Basketball Team, also known as the “Dream Team.” That team would write history, not only because the team won the gold medal, but also because of the team members.
Tulu, however, won gold in Sydney, and she is still going strong, pulling off a great victory in Doha not long ago.
