Prokhorov was regarded as a politically controversial figure by the west.
The project that earned Basov, Prokhorov and Townes their prize was a device that generated an intense beam of pure microwave radiation called a maser, an acronym of microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.
Prokhorov became assistant chief of the laboratory, and immediately organised a group of young scientists to investigate questions of radio spectroscopy and, somewhat later, of quantum electronics.
