  Aleksandr Shcherbakov Information
Aleksandr Shcherbakov was a founding member of the Soviet Writers' Union, along with Maxim Gorky.
Following the latter's death in 1936, Shcherbakov was transferred from his role as First Secretary to the lower role of Secretary of the Leningrad Regional Committee where he reported to Andrei Zhdanov.
Shcherbakov died of heart failure in 1945, and the following year the town of Rybinsk was renamed Shcherbakov in his honour (and reverted in 1957).

Abstract   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
From 1934 to 1936, the newly formed Soviet writers' union was led by the team of Maksim Gor'kij and party ideologue Aleksandr Shcherbakov.
Shcherbakov, on the other hand, stood for the party's intention to exert more comprehensive control and oversight of literature by herding writers into a single organization under the centralized control of the Department of Propaganda and ultimately, the party secretary in charge of ideology.
At first Gor'kij and Shcherbakov worked well together, but friction developed between them over whether the writers' union's main function was to keep writers informed of socialist achievements or to foster literary creativity.

Having the status of an obshchina in the Russian North is supposed to give residents a special kind of status that helps them govern themselves in ways that make the most sense to them.
The problem in Chukotka is that the former governor, Aleksandr Nazarov, opposed the idea of obshchina, and Chukotka's few obshchiny got no support from him.
Here is one of several young families who live at Kaiettyn: Oleg Shcherbakov and Mira Pananto, with their son Egor.
