It was the birthplace of the navigator and pilot Pero de Alenquer who was with Bartolomeu Dias when he discovered the Cape of Good Hope and with Vasco da Gama on his expedition to discover the sea route to India.
His exploits were vividly described in the writings of the diplomat and chronicler of Manuel I, Daimao de Góis (1507-71), scion of a noble Alenquer family.
Alenquer's particular charm lies in its setting, with even the simplest of its houses clinging picturesquely to the slopes of the hillside on which it stands.
The wine producing town areas are approximately in the middle of what is named the Estremadura District and to the north of Lisbon in the Costa Prata Area.
The area is within the boundaries of the municipality of the town of Alenquer.

Very nice fish! The lovely rose reds (from Joe), alenquers, and one really great male alenquer/RR that I got from Mary (DD Discus) are all going into one big orgy tank together! Hows that for outcrossing!
