The Aleppo Pine (Pinus halepensis) in the Memorial's grounds was planted by HRH The Duke of Gloucester on 24 October 1934.
After the capture of the Lone Pine ridge in Gallipoli (6 August 1915), an Australian Soldier who had taken part in the attack, in which his brother was killed, found a cone on one of the branches used by the Turks as overhead cover for their trenches, and sent it to his mother.
From seed shed by it she raised the tree, which she presented to be planted in the War Memorial grounds in honour of her own and others' sons who fell at Lone Pine.

In November 1992 an Aleppo pine in a Christmas tree plantation in San Diego county was found to be infected with the pathogen.
The third native Monterey pine stand on the mainland, at Cambria, was not visited in 1992, and observations in 1993 and 1994 suggested that trees in that area were free of the disease.
A Monterey pine was found infected with pitch canker at Ukiah, Mendocino County, at the junction of Talmage Road and U.S. Highway 101, in November of 1992.

Fast growing, single trunked tree growing to a height of 60 to 80 ft with a spread of 40 to 50 ft. This species is a 3 needle pine with individual needles being 6 to 12 inches long.
In nature, Torrey Pine is always near the ocean, but in cultivation, seems to do nicely in the inland valley taking both heat and drought.
